An interesting phenomenon... - 06-26-2007, 08:13 PM

This is a regular jar of (unlawfully delicious) blueberry jam from Whole Foods.

Regular, indeed - except that the bottom inch and a half (ish) is pure air. And it was completely filled yesterday.

If you look closely, you can see that the contents of this jar only fill the middle half of the jar:

Right now I'm guessing that someone turned it upside down and the lid's seal wasn't enough to keep the jam from sliding down a bit. But I've never had this happen before...

Anyways - just something odd to lighten up your Tuesday afternoon.

Does that label say "1/2 the calories of our original blueberry jam"?

Tom - And apricot, and strawberry, and blackberry (I think), and a few other varieties, yes... I'd mail you some physical evidence to corroborate my visual testimony, but I'm afraid there's not anything left to send!

Allen - I think you're on to something... didn't they do something similar with breakfast cereals?

Hey Daniel, have you come and visited your sister in Longview yet? If not, just letting you know the Kilgore Shakespeare Festival is coming up shortly (June 28th). Might be a good opportunity to get a few shots in with the camera. I hear there will be real ladies there too----so leave that cardboard cutout at home if you decide to visit.

She's in Dallas now... otherwise I'd come up. Unfortunately I don't have a camera of my own to shoot with anymore (as Ming seems bent on reminding me... )

Look at the left half of the label. It looks like it says "fruit pectin"
This is an optical illusion and a mental illusion, as you would expect it to say fruit and that is what your eyes will see falsely. In actually says "inuit pectin"

Inuit's are what people commonly refer to as "Eskimos". They are natives of the far north and live in cold and barren environments. Due to the short growing season, they have become masters at preserving fruits and vegetables, and protecting them from the harsh cold temperatures.
Pectin is a preservative but also has a chemical makeup similar to wax (and it's close cousin parafin).

Therefor Inuit pectin is an amazing and rare chemical that aids in the preservation of fruit and vegetable matter by creating seals (wax seals, bot the arf arf ball on nose types) in the containers and forcing layers of insulating air between the product and the part of the container touching the ground (which is usually frozen).

consider yourself lucky, prior to modern advances in inutit sience they used a layer of whale blubber instead of air to insulate. Thus the famous phrase "Intermo koluka geriekiak" or in english "This applesauce tastes like whale fat"

I think maybe Digital Prophet & Pika shot a mind ray at me.
I can't explain how that came out in any other manner.

From Daniel's comment, it seems that it would be completely empty!
