So I am trying to get a fax with a b&w printer, but dont' have a phone line anywheres even remotely close to the computer, just a cable line. Any chance of rigging this up???

You could get one of those phone jack extenders that plug into the wall.

You plug one into a plug near your phone jack, and the other in a plug near your fax. They're slow, but should support a 14400 fax connection. Depending on the wiring in your house, you may have varying levels of success.

There are also wireless extenders like this, but I never tried one.

I use electronic fax for my business. www.fax.com
I have been using them for over 3 years and love it.
Just $9.99 a month so it is less the phone line alone.
No extra phone line.
My own 1-800 fax number to give out to my customers.
No toner.
No machine.
In coming faxes are automatically emailed to everyone in my company that ever gets faxes.
To send a fax I just upload it to their website and click send. If I am faxing a signature then I just scan it and then upload it.
I believe they restrict the number of faxes or something for the $9.99 rate but I have never had an issue. I only send a few a month, and probably get about 20 or 30 a month.

I use eFax.com for my business, which is not photography, but my incoming are emailed so I get them on the road, and if I can image it, I can fax it. Never had a problem.

I use eFax.com as well and so far I'm very happy with them.

I used efax.com for years but recently dropped them. They were bumping up the (reasonable) costs but I was getting more and more crap/spam faxes so I just said forget it. If I were still traveling as much as I used to be I would go back to them. Not having to chase down a fax machine in a Belgium hotel in the middle of the night to get a proposal was nice!
