What's the photo op? The angular diameter of the moon is the same when photographed regardless of where it is.

Heavy clouds messed up my chance at a good shot last night. :(
Maybe tonight will be different.

I'm planning to hit a parking garage I have access to with a good view of suburbia to take a moon rise shot - if the rain/clouds cooperate that is.

That will be great, but don't expect the moon to appear larger than normal in your shots.
The effect is one that the brain plays tricks on us.

You will see this, but in reality it is an optical illusion. As is this photo.

That's interesting. I never knew that. Of course I've never tried shooting a "big" moon. I would have been disappointed.

I have posted this before, but here it is again

here are 2 shots I took back in June 2006 and I stacked one over top of another to show that the camera captures basically the same size object.

both shots were using the Canon 20D, and the sigma 50-500 @ 500mm. one shot was when the moon was fully above the horizon but still very close to it. the second shot was several hours later when the moon was well above the horizon.

edit: now when I took these shots the moon on the horizon did look much larger than it did higher in the sky

Dumb question.
But how do you get the moon exposed properly without getting the trail from the earth moving?

moon shot exposures are fairly fast. do NOT let your camera do the thinking on exposure settings. the cameras meter is fooled my the moon.

here is some info on it
