Men vs Women- WHO TALKS MORE?

I call BS on this study because of the following:
The students were fitted with unobtrusive recorders that sampled their conversations—the students didn't know when the recorders were on. From the samples, a total number of words for the day could be calculated.
Also by what I read the sample would be too small to be relevant, suprised that such an illustrious journal would accept this article.

Really in my book to do this study right you would have over 500 subjects, multiple races similar to US population breakdowns with at least one male and female from each racial group, then put monitors on them for 30 days and tell the subjects that the monitors can come on at any time but all things said will be confidential but then have the monitors record for 24 hour periods at a time and a few random units record for the whole 30 days. That would give a better results than what they did because as many people may realize that guys do talk quite a bit but they generally do it over short periods of time with a lot of language use over that short period and extrapolating that out to 24 hours is just assinine.

Also I don't think College students would be the best subjects to do this on because there may be classes where they are required to speak which would skew the results, just like putting one of these on a PBX operator who talks all shift or a person in a call center.

Also to me a 3+% difference is statistically significant while the article doesn't think so.

I don't need some fancy-schmancy study to prove who talks more. I know for a fact, from simple observation, that women do. They are creatures of communication (they spell intimacy "t-a-l-k"; men spell it "s-e-x"). Leave it to a bunch of researchers to complicate a simple matter.

I don't know about overall, and would probably tend to agree. However, since the advent of the cell phone, I see WAY more men on the phone driving than women. My hubby also spends 200% more time on his cell than I do mine - and I have the bill to prove it.

You have to be kidding (j/kin). I see teenage girls in groups of 5 all talking on their cell phones at the same time. I see dates in restaurants where the "date" spends most of their time on the cell. People (particularly young people) are addicted and teathered to their cell... I still laugh when I hear a bride say, "My fiance' texted me this morning with such a wonderful message..."

Actually I'm not kidding. In my part of the world, I am constantly getting stuck behind a big truck with a guy leaned over to the middle of the vehicle talking on a cell and can't seem to make up his mind about how fast he wants to go. I think teenagers go beyond gender as far as phones go.
