Wireless keyboard / mouse - 07-11-2007, 09:18 AM

I have a room that is currently our "office" but are planning to take the desk out (its huge desk) and convert it to a spare bedroom / tv room.

I have a 46" sony LCD that I hung on the wall. So after we put the daybed (used as a couch for sitting/watching movies, ps3, etc.. but also bed for guests), and a chair and little end tables... there is no room for the computer desk anymore.

my thought was to connect the computer up to my new LCD tv and then have a wireless keyboard/mouse on the coffee table in front of the daybed.

I hooked up the computer to the tv last night and its amazing, i was afraid there would be a compatibilty problem and picture either wouldnt fill the screen or resolution or something would be off... but its awesome!! 46" computer screen.. lol

so my question is, will a wireless keyboard/mouse work from about 6 feet away from the computer? im not sure if they are like a remote control on a tv where they have to be "directly pointed" or more like a bluetooth and just work from wherever...

Your best bet would be bluetooth. Normal wireless requires RF and usually pretty close. Mostly depends on where you plan on "hiding" your desktop.

Bluetooth can go out to 33'. YMMV. My bluetooth headset doesn't like walls much so penetrating a wall can be difficult.

I like the idea of attaching to your TV. I am building a portable gaming / work rig here shortly (described in a thread from a few days ago). When on the road, it'll be attached to a Dell 24" LCD monitor and when at home hopefully attached to a 62"

For gaming, wireless is bad. Latency can get ya killed so I am going with a completely wired solution. My situation is different than yours though.

Check www.newegg.com for wireless mice & keyboards. They have a pretty decent selection and are usually cheaper than other websites. You may also want to check www.buy.com and www.bestbuy.com as they have occassional sales that make it cheaper.

Good luck

i really like the bluetooth idea better. I think thats probably the best way to go, quick question though. My computer (desktop) doesnt have bluetooth that Im aware of. How can I make it bluetooth so a keyboard/mouse will work?

i think this is going to work out great for me. I was pretty pumped last night when I saw that it really worked how I wanted it to. I was just afraid it wasnt going to be right. But resolution and everything was perfect... for gaming its not that big of an issue because I have the ps3... ill post some pictures up when I have it done, but might be a couple weeks.

Most of the bluetooth kits will have a USB dongle that will be a bluetooth adapter. You'll plug it into the back of your desktop (or front depending on where you have a free USB port and also determined by where you "hide" your desktop.

Honestly, I can't really make any recommendations on wireless as I haven't done any research. This does look like a decent setup and the price from this e-bay vendor is pretty good.

Logitech would probably be your best bet as they have the largest selection of Bluetooth peripherals.

i have 3 set of wireless mouse/keyboard from logitech, the regular one lose sensitivity around 5-6 feet. I need a good distance connectivity since my screen is rather huge. My seat is 11' back from the screen. Get the Bluetooth and the one that you linked worked well, i think i paid $250 when it first come out. I like the keyboard, so flat and melt in you hands.

welcome to HTPC.. :)
