Los Angeles for the weekend.... - 07-12-2007, 02:56 PM

Leaving tomorrow afternoon, and I'll be there until Sunday evening. I have a seminar during the day on Saturday, and early Sunday morning.

Any suggestions on what to see, where to go? I'm staying right off Hermosa/Manhatten Beach, by the airport.

I've got a suggestion to check out the Getty Center. Any other thoughts?

Anywhere down along the coast by San Diego or up the coast near Malibu and Santa Barbara. It is very nice up there.

Yeah, Santa Barbara is like 100 miles from LA. I've heard it's stunning up there though...

#1: If you can get to the Getty, you have to do it. It's one of the true amazing pieces of architecture in the US. And if it's a clear day (good luck with that) it's even more incredible. Bring the camera with a wide and a zoom (interior shots will need something lowlight). The Getty has skylights with partitions that move with the sun so that no direct sunlight will ever touch the artwork. Still, you'll need some lowlight lens to make it work.

#2: Hermosa and Manhattan in the summer... Dude, if you venture a mile outside of these two cities I'd be surprised. You are going to be surrounded by fun bars, great eateries and some of the most seriously beautiful people on the planet.

#3: Venice beach isn't too far away and will eat up gigabytes of CF cards. It's a freak show up there along with some fun art/architecture. You could ride a bike on the boardwalk from Hermosa up to Venice (it's a trek but a beautiful one).

I would also recommend the Santa Monica Pier.

Boring old me would just hang at Imperial Hill...

...or munch on a Double-Double from the In-And-Out at the Grassy Knoll...

But there's a really great hole-in-the-wall called El Tarasco on Rosecrans in Manhattan Beach. Cheap and great food!

Take the 405 south to the 710 to Long Beach and check out the Queen Mary and the Aquarium.

And when you're done with the Queen Mary, walk over to the helipad and take the helicopter over to Catalina for the day (or 2).

Second Night Owl's suggestion, LAX is 747 heaven. Only had two hours to burn so I went to the top of parking garage #3.
