Nathan Myhrvold's Digital Safari Tips At... - 07-17-2007, 02:59 PM

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/es...ari-Tips.shtml

A comprehensive article by Myhrvold, former longtime chief technology officer for Microsoft and longtime photographer, on what to take on safari. Gives plus and minus of both Canon and Nikon. Detailed strategy for backing up data, lots of data(16 GB for one morning's pix). He goes into the expected detail about hard drives, lenses, bodies, etc. Even a table of what he takes. Although he uses Canon, the table gives the Nikon equivalents, also. Very thoughtful.

Interestingly, he sees the camera and lens supports as the most important gear on a safari and gives tons of info along the lines of "Consider the Beanbag," "Vehicular Configuration Affecting Support Choices," and "Securing Tripods to Moving Platforms." The titles are mine but the info is his.

A very good read.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for posting! What every photographer here (whether sports, nature, event, etc) needs to read is Nathan's treatise on using Breezesys's Downloader Pro. I have been using it since 1.0 and I use a similar workflow to Nathan. It (along w/ Breezebrowser) is the absolute fastest combination for fast multiple downloads.

Cheers
James

Cool article...lots of great info.

Of course, the one thing that you REALLY need on a safari...

Is a guy who is slower than you.

James- Myhrvold discusses Downloader Pro in the article.

Jason- Exactly! I understand now why I get so many invites to safaris.

Nice article but the one thing he didn't mention was what kind of cargo plane he use to get all that gear there?
