SPOILER: Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows (Spoilers Inside!!) - 07-23-2007, 12:54 PM

So I know many of you have been reading it, what are your thoughts?

Got mine about noon on Saturday from Amazon, read about 150 pages, and then started back up Sunday morning and finished by lunch time.

Over all I think it was fantastic.

Only a few things I wish: I wish she'd written another chapter. Maybe one where we see Fred's funeral to help us mourn him, and Ron & Hermione and Harry & Ginny actually get married, or at least together.

What did you think?

I liked it. Im not sure I would want it to be any longer than it was.
It tied up alot of loose strands. I always like it when an author really finishes a work.

Now I wonder if they are going to film the next two movies back to back... That way they cast isnt 30 tring to play 17 year olds... :)

I agree, most of the loose ends were tied up. It will be interesting to see what makes the movie from the last book, because she used so many of the smaller sub-plots to make everything tie up so nicely.

As far as another chapter goes, I just find it kind of sad that she spent so much time developing Fred and George's characters and highlighting their twin relationship. Then she went and killed Fred off, and all we get about George dealing with his twin's death is a small scene where he's seen 'kneeling at the head of Fred's body, while the rest of the family surrounds.' I think she owed Fred more than that.

I do as well, I wonder if she was up agaists a page limit or time deadline and either she had to cut it short or the editors did the job?

I also would have like to seen 'Arry and Ginny share a private moment. That would have made the 19 years later better.

just got done talking to my mother about the book, figured I'd give her the weekend to read it...and boy is she irate! somehow her copy starts on page 16! She had pre-ordered through Barnes and Noble, and the closest one is something like 50 miles away. She has to wait for them to resend it. I feel bad for her now.

I thought the book was excellent but I had a couple of problems with it. For instance, When Neville slays Nagini, he uses Gryffendor's sword. But where did he get the sword? It has to be the original, because Nagini was a horcrux and a horcrux can only be destroyed with certain items or special magic, so the copy would not have worked. The goblin had the sword the last time we saw it. 200 pages later Neville has it when he slays Nagini. Any thoughts? Maybe I missed something.

I feel that Rowling did not give the reader enough closure at the end. What did happen to George after Fred's funeral? How about Luna Lovegood, where was she 19 yrs later? Did Harry, Ron, and Hermoine ever graduate Hogwart's, since they skipped thier lst year of school to pursue the Dark Lord? Did they end up taking their N.E.W.Ts? Is Harry an Auror? Who is Minister of Magic 19 years later? Kingsley is made temporary MOM but who replaced him? What about Ron's parents, where are they?

I know I am a Harry Potter geek, but I found the ending absolutly maddening!!!

Edited: To fix a typo.

Shaggyshack:

Neville gets Griffyndor's sword out of the Sorting Hat, which Voldemort had put on him and burned, trying to punish him for not joining Voldemort. But the same kind of protection that Lily Potter had given Harry, Harry now gave to his friends, because he died for them.

Doesn't this have to do with what happened to Harry in the second book. Isn't he told that a true gryffindor can have the sword when it's needed or something like that?

Yup and Neville has certainly proven himself a true Gryffindor.

She did not give enough closure in the end, in my opinion.

I reread before I posted but I guess my mind just added the not in there.

Good Valid Point! I just didn't think of it. I fished all day and read all night, so I was going on very little sleep when I got to that point in the book. Definitly makes more sense keeping that in mind.

I wanted to see Voldemort get defeated, but I didn't want the story of Harry to end. I am wondering if another writer, after paying a heavy royalty, can take up Harry's story where Rowling left off? I have seen it done with other series. I doubt Rowling would like it but I wonder if it will happen?

I wonder if a new writer could do a good enough job though.
