Playstation 3 as Blue-Ray DVD player? - 07-23-2007, 02:02 PM

Recently the PS3 bug has bit me pretty bad.

I have PS2 and love it. I wasn't excited at all when Sony launched PS3. However, Blue Ray DVD technology catches my eyes when i bought a new high-definition TV. So far, the cheapest Blue-ray DVD player happens to be, PS3. Not only that, it offers other cool features.

Everything is good but i have one question and that is a BIG deciding factor. Does PS3 (US version) play both PAL and NTSC DVD(non-Blue Ray)? The reason i ask is because, i heard it plays both PAL and NTSC versions of PS3 games (in Blue-ray technology). I was just wondering whether that applies to regular PAL and NTSC DVDs, because i have a bunch of PAL movies that my current DVD player won't play.

Does anyone here own a US version PS3 and sucessfully play regular PAL DVD?

Unfortunately, the answer is NO. It doesn't play PAL material. Nor will other US version BR player.

Not sure if this is entirely true but a modded PS3 can play all regions of DVDs

I think the question is does modchip allows you to receive FW upgrade? Which is very critical to use ps3 as media player.

Not sure what a PAL is, but we have had a PS3 for a few months and LOVE IT! We play regular DVD's on it, and dont have any problem. My husband is ga ga over all the cool things it does, and is so happy that I was a good wife and got it for him for his birthday!

Ah, so i guess the PAL and NTSC compatibility only applies to Blue-ray disc on the US PS3 eh. Too bad for me.

I really appreciate the answer, y'all.

The cool thing is the PS3 is the cheapest Blu-ray player out there, and it has the additional bonus of being a gaming console..... :)

I know this does not pertain to the PS3 but i had a modded Xbox and along with the modd chip was a totally new dashboard (or operating system..if you will). The new dashboard included different software to play all types of media formats.

Heather, do you know what version of the firmware running on your husband's PS3? If not, can you ask for me, please?

He says hes running 1.82, but that they are supposed to be a 1.9 coming pretty quick. He says he goes to the forum at www.playstation.com and he goes to www.neogaf.com and there forum has info about all gaming systems, but he has seen developers, and pr guys from the game stations.

Remember PAL/NTSC and region encoding are two different things. I suspect a region 1 player won't play region 2 (UK/Europe) discs but could be hacked to make it work.

However if it doesn't have NTSC playback capability then you're sunk anyway. PAL is the TV standard in Europe, it has 640(-ish?) lines whereas NTSC has only 500-odd.

If you got a region 2 disc to play and it played in black and white and maybe without sound, then the TV standard is your problem.

And remember you also need a PAL-capable TV, and we have not found a single one yet in the US.

I'm speaking as a Brit with an extensive region 2 DVD collection. We got round it by bringing our region2-hacked-to-multiregion DVD player which also will convert to NTSC.

My PAL DVDs are all region 0, which means region free. Just found out from the PS3 forum, the NTSC PS3 in Hong Kong, with the latest firmware update, can play both PAL and NTSC DVDs (region free of course). Now i just hope the firmware update for North America PS3 will do the same.
