Actually, no, not at all. It was alluded to pretty strongly in book 5 (I think) when Harry got into Snapes memories about his mother and father. Specifically how James Potter treated Snape--teasing him mercilessly about his feelings for Lily.
I was however totally surprised by the twists of Dumbledore's family and the way he acted as a young child. I was also disappointed in his character when we found out why his hand was all withered in book 6.
