I am thinking of getting a new phone. The one I had went in the pool with me (it was an accident) and while it still works, it seems to be sporadic. I've been using my iPAQ this week, and while I like that I can have my contacts/calendar/email/occasional use of gps, I'm not sure I love it. Though it may just take some getting used to.

But, aside from the iphone, what do you have or recommend?

well it depends on who your provider is. since you mentioned the iphone, you must be with AT&T.

do you just want a phone to make and receive calls, or do you want all the wizbang features to text, IM, web stuff, ring tones and MP3 capability and all that junk?

lol, oh yeah. I want a calendar, I don't really care about the other stuff. Just simple, phone, calendar, text. Is the razr a good phone? I need a durable phone. I have 3 kids.

I have a razr and if you have 3 kids all grabbing for your phone I would say no. I have had some issues whit my razr, but its free so I dont care. the battery life is probably not going to make you happy either, it pretty lousy as compared to other phones i have had..

its decent to use but has some down falls.

Yeah, see, that's what I thought. I also should have said I want my calendar synced with my outlook. *sigh* maybe I should just get used to the thing I've got. It just seems bulky.

Thanks James :)

The iphone seems like it would be a great choice for what you are wanting. Another very easy and nice solution is the blackberry curve. Makes texting very easy, and the email integration is very very nice. Synching the calendar and contacts is easy and very functional as well. If you are not wanting corporate integration, then the treo line does a very nice job of all the above as well.

I have sprint and I signed up using the SERO plan. $30 gets you 500 anytime minutes, unlimited text, unlimited vision/data(you can tether it to a laptop), unlimited weekend/nights, free sprint to sprint, and a lot of other things. I also got the Mogul, it is using WM6, has a dual core processor, is thin, has a full keyboard, and it is touchscreen.

Here are some pics from a previous post.

Have you thought about the Blackberry PERL? It's a nice compromise between a full size smart phone and a regular phone.

Yeah, I think it would be fantastic to have this. But I just read that one use cracked the screen and it cost $275 to fix it. I think I'd be in debt :)

Will definitely look into the blackberries :) :) Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

Might want to look into the Windows Mobile Smart Phones. You can download your contacts from Outlook. Technically it's also a PDA so you can send email/text, surf the web, and run Windows Mobile applications.

The one I have (Cingular 2125 - probably have a slightly newer model with a different name by now) keeps the regular "phone" form factor. It doesn't have a flip-out keyboard or anything like that so it's not too bulky. I like this form factor better than the more PDA-centric phones, but then again I don't do any text/email from it. But I do occasionally check traffic on the web, so the WM functionality is nice. I also have a DOF calculator installed on the phone which comes in handy when out shooting.

If you plan to make heavier use of the text/email capabilities, I think they also have a version with a full keypad.

Oh btw the 2125 I have seems pretty well made, it's survived drops onto concre floors and other various abuse and has held up well.

Yea, get an IPhone, they run $599 or $699 and don't work with anything you will need. Plus you have to sign up for around $1200 or so two year account. I think AT&T and SPRINT are in a race to see who can drop the most calls. I have Alltel and it works just fine. I use it as a phone, not a gameboy or a playstation or a hairdryer or whatever you can do for $600 bucks. My phone is the standard Kyocera with a camera (that is not very good) but it sounds great and I never drop a call anymore like I did with Sprint. My bill is about $35 or $40 a month and I roam just about everywhere. But you can get an IPhone and look cool. But you will be broke and won't be able to buy camera stuff..

I picked up an iPhone this week and am in love with it. Surfing the web on it is a joy and the interface is fantastic. Consider me a fanboi!

That being said, I also kept my blackberry to have realtime integrated email, calendar, and contacts. I work for IBM so hopes of seemless iPhone integration are slim, hence keeping the leash. Definitely look at the blackberry curve, it is a truely a wonderful device. If I wasn't such a gadget whore, the curve is what I would have bought.
