We are finally heading to NC labor day weekend Since the Navy said that or nothing
Any way we are spending a week back "home" and then a week in the Great Smokies.
Anybody know where some great water wheels, old barns etc... are?
We will be staying near Maggie Valley, but plan to go white rafting as this is one of my favorite past times and the kids are finally old enough (dd by like 9 days lol) to do this.
But it has been over 15 years since we have been to the mountains so any advice is appreciated

Be sure and go to Cades Cove on the Tennessee side. There are several old home sites with barns, churches, and a working grist mill. I just got back from there last weekend, but haven't had time to process any photos yet.

who is the guy David lol

As for the dates the I brought to dhs and the chiefs attention that Chiefs initiation is early Sep and dh is up for it, still don't know if he made it BUT any way now they have decided to see if they can extend his leave into the new fiscal year so now we are looking at Oct2-3 week or 3-4 week, which will actually be perfect (I hope) for the leaves changing
Thanks for the tips

Those are some nice images Rick.
But have you lost your ever loving mind? You really stuck your head in there with the snake?
That is about as crazy as my dh putting a 6ft rattle snake in a box and carrying it across the yard and to the drainage ditch lol.
Again nice pics though.
We went to Gatlinburg 11.5 years ago for our honeymoon looks different with snow on the ground lol

My wife was shocked that I did it. I took those with my 20D and the EF-S 10-22.

I've been there several times in the fall and winter. Fall is absolutely beautiful during peak color. I am originally from Lexington, KY so it was just a 3 1/2 hour drive.

2nd for Cades Cove - 07-27-2007, 07:45 AM

I'll second Cades Cove. Also there are many waterfalls if you're up to a hike. Nothing special but here's a link to a few I took there last year. http://wondershots.zenfolio.com/p207940888/

Got a ton more but haven't uploaded them.

Yeah it is beautiful in Oct.
I am hoping that is when the Navy changes it to but nothing is set is stone NOW since they changed it.
We are from the center of NC but not been to the Mountains since our honeymoon in Jan of 96 lol and there was snow on the ground so we didn't see much other than Gatlinburg itself. We gotta hit the hardrock though dh has cups from about 40 of them lol.
