I'm surprised he didn't know that. That's been required ever since I first traveled internationally in the '60's.

Thanks for sharing this, Alan. Wife and I were planning to take a Euro-trip next year and this is good information to know.

I flew to Scotland in 1983, and all customs did was ask me to take the lens off my camera and let them look inside the spare lenses. I went to cancun in 1991, and had the same experience.

If you read the entire thread, there have been different experiences for different travellers. IIRC, he did know about the form, but had been told it was no longer necessary.

I just got back from Europe with a Bronica medium format camera and never had a single person look at it other than the x-ray machine.

I know the law is there, but I have never had a problem. I go to Russia, and former Soviet countries, once or twice a year, as well as other European countries. I have never been checked. I have all my camera gear in a camera bag, or backpack, along with my laptop.

Of course, everyday is a new adventure. :)

I've never had a problem.
I just got back less than 2 weeks ago from the UK and utilized airports in London & Glasgow - during all the terror problems. Yep - the security was tight, but I had my backpack with a 20D, extra batts, 100-400L, Canon 100mm Macro, Canon 10-22, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 18-55, a backup Rebel XTi, and a Laptop and never even got questioned (I was surprised to get through teh x-rays without extra checks. All in all that's about $4500 worth of gear on my back. Only problems I had were with my shoes.

A year and a half ago I had a smaller setup (20D, 70-200/2.8, about 3 smaller lenses, laptop, and portable HD) that I carried through security in Rome, Florance, Paris, and Houston without a problem.

The only problem I have had anywhere was to and from Cancun. I had a new pair of Wranglers, and one of the copper rivets set off the detectors at IAH and in Cancun. It wasn't a big deal in Houston, but I couldn't get the inspectors in Cancun to use a wand until I had taken off my boots, belt and everything else except my pants and shirt.

Found this on the CBP website under "Traveler's Checklist"

"Receipts or registration paperwork (CBP Form 4457) for any new electronics, such as a camera or laptop, that I’m taking with me? (Only suggested if traveling with recently purchased goods. Not necessary for goods more than 6 months old.)"

I guess I will find out on Sunday when I leave for San Juan to catch my cruise to the Southern Carribean.

I have traveled all over the globe since 1993 with laptop and a lot of camera equipment and have never been asked for this document.
