So I'm going to be a big girl and going on my first cruise. Taking my husband (who paid for it..mighty nice of me huh!!!) and four kids 12, 12, 11 and 8. Going to Costa Maya, Cozumel, Yucatan, and Roatan. Anything I should know or take photos of?? You guys are always a wealth of information so bring it on!!!

In the Yucatan, make the trip to see Chichen Itsa, very powerful place.

Cozumel, go snorkeling at the state park outside of town. Cheaper, and waaaaay better than the shore excursion you buy from the cruise line.

The other places I haven't been, so can't help there. Have fun and watch out for hurricanes!

Well don't make the mistake I did. While in the Bahamas, I didn't do enough homework to know how much time I'd have OFF the boat. Turned out we had to be back on the boat on every excursion by 4:00. I lugged a TON of camera gear on the trip and only had between 10:00 and 4;00 or so to shoot...which isn't exactly prime time to be shooting on white sandy beaches and not a cloud in the sky. I have only been on one cruise so I am not sure if that is the norm (the time off the boat) but next time I will do more research before I take my gear...

We did the same cruise in January of this year. There are some great ruins in Costa Maya; a jungle complex of maybe 6 pyramids. Very cool place, bring water and memory cards. Roatan has a pretty good island tour plus lots of colorful shoping areas just off the dock area. Cozumel is also a very colorful place, great shopping too. Be sure to take throwaway rain ponchos and a all-weather camera bag. I used a Lowepro Slingbag 200 that worked very well rain (some) and shine (a lot). Have fun!!
By the way; I took 2 bodies, a 17-55, 18-200, 12-24, SB-800, tripod, laptop, and a pile of cf cards. Used em all! We had all day in each port to wander around.

I took 20 gig total but did not use more than 10 on any given day. I did use a bunch of CDs and DVDs backing up every day.

When you get back on the boat to leave the ports, you can usually get some beautiful shots of the sunset.
