FYI--Laptops and water don't mix!!! - 08-04-2007, 06:53 PM

Well, my MacBook Pro that I purchased this past December suffered a catastrophic failure today. It seems that the internal electrical parts don't like having a glass of water splashed on it.

I'm afraid, but hoping that I'm wrong, that I lost everything on it! I guess we'll see when I hear back from the Apple folks.

Well I've had a couple camera dunkings, but not a laptop. With the cameras, once they dried out, with the help of a hair dryer, they worked again. I hope that is the case with your computer, but I don't know if they will work the same way as cameras. In fact, I don't know if the new digital cameras would dry out the same as the old mechanical ones. But as long as nothing fried during the dunking, you would think that it should still work?

Well, let the computer dry out over night. I had the very same thing happen to me at Starbucks when I was working on it recently. I had taken off the lid to let my coffee cool. I went to grab the cup and sloshed some coffee on the keyboard. Within five minutes the thing went dead. I had some important stuff on there too! I was panicked! However, after about a day the coffee dried out and it has worked just fine ever since.

The Dell Inspiron I am using right now had a glass of tea spilled into it about a month ago. As soon as it happened I flipped it upside down and let drip out, and then my husband opened it up and dried everything really good. It was working just fine when he powered it back up.

I wish I had had the patience and where-with-all to have done that, but I took it straight to the Apple store. Sometimes lessons are learned the hard (and expensive) way!

good advise for anything electronic when this happens. Remove all power (including batteries) immediately and allow it to dry for a few days. A low heat from a hair dryer can speed things up a bit (don't cook it, just warm it to speed up evaporation and circulation).

For a notebook, try to remove as many doors and covers as possible (HDD, memory, even the keyboard are easily removeable). Leave the display open and stand the unit on one end.

Water won't hurt anything if there is no power on, the boards were most likely cleaned after assembly with water anyway. Drinks with other things (like sugars, etc) can leave behind deposits than can short things out even if dry, so you can have less luck with these.

I typed for years on a notebook that had lived thru numerous spills, the only long term effect was a few slightly sticky keys.....

BTW one thing I look for when buying a notebook is a spill tray under the keyboard. It will appear as a short upturned edge around the outer perimeter of the keyboard. It is pretty easy to spot and can be a huge insurance policy. They used to be pretty standard but may not be so anymore.

Sorry to hear this.
I hope it isn't too bad.

My mom did something similar lol she spilt her cheerwine and had the computer in her lap, instead of it getting on the computer she flung the computer out in the floor ( if you knew my mom this would be so funny to see, and dh wonders where I get some of my oddness from lol) Any way she didn't get any in/on the computer but she wound up breaking the screen instead.
Hope yours isn't too expensive

It's actually not uncommon for this to happen nor is it uncommon for the notebook to work again. The biggest thing to do is turn it off immediately and let it dry out completely before powering back up. 9 times out of 10 it will work without issue.

How you doin'?

I'd have had a coronary and be spending my time in intensive care, and not getting to Bass Pro Shops for Russels seminar.
Good to meet with you. Good luck with the Apple. I think they are built like tanks, so maybe you will get lucky with this one.
