Question Used car buying NADA or KBB or Edmunds - 08-08-2007, 10:56 AM

I am looking at buying a used car, 1991 Buick LeSabre with 80,000 miles. Ive been checking blue book values but they are all so far from each other, I don't know which is the best one to go by. Any suggestions?

The car is in great shape. not a scratch or dent on it..clean title, new tires one owner sat in the garage...all that stuff they tell you.

edmunds is pretty fair.
I normally use edmunds and kelly. most resellers are going to use kelly.

If you're buying it in Texas most dealers go by the NADA book price.

If you're arguing price, use the lower of the three as the buyer.

Every bank, insurance company and dealer uses NADA. Kelley and Edmunds are used by those who thing their car is worth more. In my neck of the woods, a '91 Le Sabre Custom is $3,200 High and a Limited is $3,468 High. If the one you are looking at is really nice with no prior collision or hail damage (little old lady driver with garage), it might even be worth more. My wife had one that we sold about 18 months agow with 160,000 miles on it for around $3600 as I recall. It was a great car.

Also - try Carfax - run the VIN through it and it'll give you some history (odometer, insurance claims, accidents, etc). Worth the $20 or so.

If you have the plate, and it's Texas, let me know and I'll let you know if there has only been one owner.

If your financing it through a bank, find out what they use. My credit union uses NADA.
