What's the most boring road in Texas? - 08-14-2007, 03:19 PM

An ongoing thread got me to thinking. What is the most boring highway you can think of in Texas. The one that tries to put you to sleep whenever you're on it.

After some reflection I have to put in my vote for 77 from Kingsville to Brownsville.

I can't really think of any that stand out that I've been on. But any road can be boring to me if I am going out of town and am anxious to get to where I am going.

I'm not in Texas, but when I was down there last, I20 between FW and Abilene was pretty bad.

I don't know what would be considered boring. If a road is wide, open and deserted (that includes cops), I would have a lot of fun cruising at three digit speeds.

Just about any road out of Houston:

1. Highway 59 south from Houston to Victoria. I've driven this road so many times to get to the S. Texas brush that I can do it in my sleep. Probably have. Once you're south of Victoria you get into the brush country and it becomes interesting to me.

2. I-10 east from Houston to the LA border. A big yawner.

3. I-10 west from Houston to San Antonio. Nothing to see until you get to the Hill Country.

I-27 between Lubbock and Amarillo is by far the most boring. You're on top of the caprock with nothing but farmland to look at.

Smack in the middle of the drive....Plainview. I mean, come on.

I used to hate 59 between Houston and Center (where we turned off for Shreveport). Now, its not so bad, but that long, straight stretch just south of Shepherd is a killer.

10 does suck between Houston and San Antonio, as it does between Houston and Beaumont.

I didn't care much for 77 between Victoria and Refugio, either. I cut out the Refugio to Crappus leg by taking 136 through Bayview. Much better!

288 was fairly boring (all of it), but I haven't been down there in years.

All roads in all directions out of Brownfield, are bad bad bad for sleep inducement. 84 from Sweetwater to Lubbock is pretty bad as well, and the hi po are all over the place on that one.

And Dumas on the way to Colorado is one of the most disheartening feelings in the world... seems to take forever as well as sap all your energy to get there, and once you do, you still have a long road full of nothing ahead of you.

I-37 from San Antonio to Corpus Christi may not be the winner, but it should place. For the first years of its existence, there was hardly even anyplace to stop.

For me, I-10 between Houston & San Antonio has the highest boredom per mile. But for sheer mind & butt-numbing blandness, start anywhere on I-10 west of Junction or I-20 west of Abilene. Continue west till you hit El Paso. Its long. Its straight. After the first 2 hours not even the mountains break it up enough to count. The new 80mph limit doesn't help anyone but the gas stations.

Just when you think it can't get any worse, the trip back is at least twice as long.

You know it! Also, the little FM roads west of here - they are boring during the day but remind me of an alien abduction road at night. Creepy.
