I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way, but Houston animal shelters kill about 80,000 animals a year. These are mostly pet dogs and cats. The kill rate is approximately 80% of the intake. 7-8% of the animals get reunited with their owners, while about 4-5% get adopted.
I was appalled by what Vick and his friends were doing, but a dog would stand a much better chance at Bad News Kennels than being picked up at any shelter here in town. Compared to what we lawfully do every day here in Houston, Vick was a novice.
Here's a link to a report on Houston shelters, focusing on BARC. The Houston pound also refuses to use the chip scanners to identify strays. It's not an issue of cost: some groups volunteered to give them the necessary equipment. And the pound refused the donation.

Duffy | Maybe so, but at least these animals are humanely killed and not beated, choked, shot, or made to fight to the death. If these shelters didn't kill the dogs that didn't get picked up their population would be out of control. It's just a fact of life.

If you think Houston is bad, San Antonio has even worse statistics for it's "shelter" also known as "kill facility" in my opinion. They are not known for being terribly humane either...Oh, and may Michael Vick die an early, miserable death and rot in hell.

A question to ponder....if it comes out that he is innocent, who steps up to help repair his reputation? everyone has stepped up to tarnish it....no trial yet, guilty pleas of "shady friends and family"...hell, i have shady friends and family members - i had a "friend" who was a really good friend, both her and her husband....until she decided to kill her husband (a DC police offer) and collect the insurance money....when she got caught she made up all kind of crap that she fed to the feds against friends and family, me included, and tried to set us up to save her own worthless butt....had it worked, my life, and others who had nothing to do with what she did or said, would have been totally tarnished...thank God it did not...people are so quick to grab a story and run with it -- "innocent until proven guilty" is a load of crap these days -- it's "guilty cause the media makes you look bad"...oh well, off to starbucks....oh yeah, truth be told, i really don't care about Vick, don't know him, he does not help pay my bills so whatever happens is not my concern....it's just how we respond to unproven allegations these days that concerns me....ok, now really off to starbucks

No one will .. and trial by public opinion is unfortunately all too common place. Innocent til proven guilty people .. remember it, its part of what our country was founded on.

And unfortunately, even though he hasnt been found guilty (other than by the court of public opinion), the NFL is about to suspend him for a year. Gotta love it when a national organization bows down to the public with no proof of any wrong doing. Same thing with Pacman. He hasnt been convicted of anything yet, but hes out for a year as well. True, he hasnt made the best decisions on who to associate with or where to hang out, but thats no reason to drag his name thru the mud on a daily basis.
If either one gets convicted, then game on. Until then, lay off.

I tried to find some statistics for other cities, but its not that easy to do.
The two I found are:
Los Angeles: Kills about 22,000 animals a year, which is about 41% of those it impounds.
Calgary has a dog population of about 92,000. They impound 5% of those dogs each year, and kill 4% of the dogs they impound, or about 190/year.
You may be right about population control. But if so, its hard to see why the population of dogs is not out of control in Los Angeles and exploding in Calgary.
I might not be so hard on the pound, but I know someone who went there to pick up his dog. He was told it was after hours and he wouldn't be able to pick the dog up until the next morning. He arrived the next morning just as they opened, but it was too late. The pound had killed his dog before opening.

Yeah, we should treat everyone like James Curley, who was elected alderman while serving time for fraud, and then served part of his term as mayor also serving time for federal fraud charges. Those were the days.

Not the same at all, he was already found guilty when he was elected alderman, but still elected. The later fraud charge happened after he was already mayor, though he was not removed from the office, and was not reelected. It's all in the link you provided.

Yes, Vick is innocent untill proven guilty. Fortunately, I just have an opinion, and my opinion will have no bearing on his legal case what-so-ever. That said, I think he is a worthless piece of s***. Maybe he wasn't actually fighting the dogs, or killing them in cold blood (my *guess* is that he was all the way). Even if he weren't though, it WAS happening on his property, and in fact, all over his property. I do not see any way that this could have been happening without him knowing and allowing it to go on. This, in my opinion, well warrants my hostile and disgusted opinion towards him. So, reguardless of his outcome in court, I still think he is a worthless human being, and he has no place in any position even resembling something of a potential role model. At the least, throw him out of the NFL. At the most, throw him behind bars and let him rot!

On his property yes, not on property he lived on or even visited regularly or so court documents show. Thats like saying you're responsible for the actions of someone else on some piece of vacation property you own, but were not at. He like a lot of other people that came from not a lot and got money bought houses for a lot of his family .. is he truly responsible for what they're doing there if he didn't know?

I agree, *if* he didn't know. From what I understand, he was at that property a LOT. Enogh that he almost lived there... | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
