Mass Storage - what server do you use? - 08-15-2007, 10:31 AM

I always archive our jobs to DVD, but I really want upload them to an external server for EXTRA safe keeping.

Someone recommended MediaMax. I tried to test their services out last night because they offer 25gigs free and it didn't go to well. When I clicked to upload the server could not be found.

I prefer going with a service that I know others have utilized for several yrs and can trust.

Any suggestions?

why not try your web server? mine gives me 300 GB's of space...and i have a few domains, so i shouldn't run out. in addition, i upload all original jpegs to smugmug...

i know, it's overkill

I work for a web company here in Kansas. We do offsite data backup, you can try it out on our website located here.

Basically you download the software, pick the folders you want to be backed up, and it uploads them to our server. Our server is replicated to another in Utah so it is protected from a local disaster here as well.

I can give you more details about our setup and how redundant we are if you'd like.

I use http://www.fotki.com I've had a paid account with them for about 5 years now, I think. Never had a problem. Every once in a while they go through an upgrade period where there will be short outages, but they've never had any serious downtime. It used to be like $25 for a year of premium membership, but it's gone up over the years and is $50 now. I think they are running a special right now though - $30 for 1 year, and like $80 for 3 years. Last time I renewed I did it for 3 years. I also like that you can keep everything password protected and private. And you can have different albums with different passwords for clients. The explorer-type view is very easy to use. The only downside to Fotki is that their printing services are crap, so just remember not to use them for printing. :)

ETA: I forgot to mention there are no storage or upload limits with Fotki. I have nearly a terabyte and a half of pictures on their servers.
