I have this friend. We started working at a job together back in 2000. I was really getting into photography just mainly landscapes and occasional people shots. She liked my work. Thought it would be cool to take pictures. She bought the same camera as me. Then another girl did too. We were the 3. We did all the same stuff. Shared ideas. Brought all our pictures to work to compare.
I stepped it up a notch. Got a new camera with more features. She bought the same one. Then so did the other so again we were the 3 amigos.
Then one left the job and later I left the job but the second one and I remained in contact and continued taking photos. I did some senior pictures first for my daughter and then for some of her friends. My friend loved them. I suggested we go into business together and get a little studio as I couldn't afford to do it on my own. She never bit on it.
Then she starts getting a few clients and then more and more clients and I find out that she went into business with her boss (my ex boss who doesn't even know the business end of the camera). That kinda aggravated me since I had expressed interest in starting a business with her for a long time.
So this week...the cheerleading sponsor for my daughters school (my daughter is a freshman cheerleader) calls me to get a price quote on pictures for the cheerleaders. I have to tell her I can't do it cuz she wants it done inside and I have no studio equipment. She tells me she has a call into my friend also. I said that I didn't think she had a studio either. WRONG. She just bought about a million dollars worth of stuff to turn a room into her home into a studio. So she got the job. And I just feel screwed over.
This girl calls or emails and asks my advice and opinion on her pictures all the time. I told her to join here and get some real input. She doesn't have the time, she'd rather just ask me. So meanwhile...I read on here the right way to do things, insurance, study, lighting, DBA, etc. and my friend is out there making all the money and taking over the market in my small town. It just doesn't seem fair.
Okay I'm done. Just had to get it off my chest.
Oh btw is there anyone on this forum who does portraits strictly on location? |
