Anyone been to Machu Picchu/Galapagos - 09-05-2007, 09:41 PM

A friend was asking me today if I had any recommendations (best time to go, places to stay, guides, etc.) for a trip to Machu Picchu and Galapagos Islands. Unfortunately, while it is a trip I would love to do one day, I haven't yet, so I had no info to share. But, I knew that some of you intrepid travelers have been and would have some great info to share. This couple are not photographers, so trips geared primarily to photography probably aren't their cup of tea, but they are well traveled and interested in exploring. Appreciate any info that anyone might pass along.

my husband went recently, but it was a business trip. one of the pieces of advice the company offered to him - was do NOT take taxis from the airport... get the hotel to pick you up - i guess there is some thievery to be watched out for.

he had a great time, he even took around 1200 photos, even though he has never used a dslr before - he did ok. i set him in p mode and raw - so most of it was salvagable except for the horribly composed ones.

I've been known to hang out in the Galapagos from time to time. Never been to Machu Picchu although it's high on the list. If there's anything I can help with, let me know.

I do know there is a hotel you can stay at right at the ruins. I can't remember the name of it off-hand. If you don't stay right there, you can either hike the Old Inca Trail or take the train up there. Cuzco is the nearest big town to Machu Picchu, and it has some incredible architecture. There is so much to do all around the area as far as sights to see. If they need a great guide, I highly suggest Mili Sangama of South American Expeditions: http://www.southamericaexp.com/.

Thanks Janet, Joe and Leslie. Joe - your series from your trip this year was spectacular. It made me want to go the Galapagos Islands even more. I'll find out a little more about what they want (I know this is a 60th birthday trip for him) and if I have any questions, I'll let you know. I wish I was going with them! Still, I'm off to Lana'i shortly, so I really can't complain....
