Exclamation Your ideas welcome.... - 09-08-2007, 09:15 PM

I finally made the leap, put in my two weeks notice and am looking to move into steady photo work. Determined not to let my last year at the University of Houston to go to waste I decided just to go for it.

I currently intern for the Houston Astros, shoot weddings, and am photographer for The Daily Cougar.

If anyone has any ideas or offers it would be greatly appreciated. My passion is in weddings and sports but I love to shoot just about anything...no nudes please.

No ideas or advise from me, but good luck, and your gallery looked good, I'm sure you'll do well.

chase,

congrats! that is awesome! I would love to shoot with you when i get to town! I would say read read read.... Running a business is really a different experience. It is a good one, but different.

Just ask my wife some days the call of news work calls to me.... Figure out what you want and create your goals.... Write them down and then start working through them...

Never run your business to just stay caught up... Always stay focus on the goals... listen to what folks want.... give it to them... and you will always have work!

I look forward to meeting you!

Enjoy!

Hi Chase,

We met met at the Bridal Extravaganza where I was exhibiting. How far ahead are you booked? I will tell you that I won't be exhibiting at the Extravaganza again this year. I just can't compete with those $5,000 mega- dispalys. I think my advertising dollars are better spent elsewhere. I would definitely make sure you have the business end together as much as the photography end - I know this from personal experience. Good luck!

I stay busy but have few bookings as of right now. Most of it is last minute (by month). So if you ever need an assistant...let me know.

Hey Chase!

Get me some more Astros tickets and I will answer your questions!

Just kiddin! How you been?

You need to come out and sit down and pick my brain when you can. There is so much more to this than taking photos and that is where most people fail.

I also have some work you might be interested in coming up, so give me a call.

I will definitely give you a call. As for 'stros tix...sadly I was considered an intern for just the summer so regardless of whether I still shoot for them my ticket account has been terminated.

Thanks

Chase

Good for you! Having no fall back makes you jump in head first up to your neck. It can be uncomfortable at 1st, but keep going. Don't give up.

One thing I noticed - especially early on - you need to bring clients to you. Its unusual to have them to be looking for a photog where you just get a steady stream of people showing up, when all you do is have a phone number and a website.

Always be out there talking, chatting people up, sharing ideas, offering what you can. During times when we want to really give business a kick in the butt, we offer free sittings for solo portraits - like newborn for example. The photo sales more than cover the cost of the gig and we usually turn a pretty penny too.

AND - my absolute BEST WOM referral system is through my hair dresser. She sees tons of people every day. So, I chat her up when I'm in (and yes, I get my hair cut too frequently) and then she chats me up - to everyone else!

Last month we got flooded with photography requests. I wasn't sure what happened. It was the salon. I'd left her a new ad piece and she LOVED it. She told everyone we are the best and they would be darn lucky to get an appointment with us. You can't pay for that kind of advertising! I was thrilled.
