Chimping, why is this bad ? - 09-09-2007, 02:25 PM

I think this is what ya'all call it when you look in you're LCD during a photo shoot. I have had a conversation with a guy at my local Ritz Camera and we we talking about capturing a certain shot. He was saying to shut off image review when shooting a wedding etc! Stop chimping! he said. Besides wearing down battery power, i see no reason not to its there for a reason. I like to look at my exposures and adjust from there. What are you're thoughts on this ? Also do you ever feel worn out after doing a wedding ? The next day I hurt! I did 2 weddings the last two weekends and the next day I was beat. I am running around and laying on the ground, up and down! Is this normal or am I just out of shape ? LOL!

If you are looking at your LCD, you may miss a shot.

Every now and then I adjust a shot using the pic I have already taken, but my auto review is perma-off. I avoid showing people shots I have just taken on it as well.

I will chimp a few times to check the RGB histogram in changing light situations (don't know if that is bad or not) It would seem in controlled light situations a few trial shots before the shoot should do it. That is just my very NON EXPERT opinion.

There's no hard and fast rule that applies to all photographers. When I'm shooting, I'll occasionally check the histogram to make sure I'm not blowing major highlights, but other than that I seldom look at it. If one feels the need to check every shot, so be it. That's their prerogative. :-)

Call me Monkeyman if this is chimping. I review the LCD periodically (i.e. all the time) to check white balance and exposure. Whatever tools you use that gets you the shot you want is o.k. in my book.

Monkeyman out.

I check the first couple of shots in each different lighting situation to ensure my adjustments are going where I want them for highlights and the histogram. From there I check as often as I feel I have the need. It is your neck if the images don't come out right and your time that is spent in post to correct what you could have gotten right out of the camera.

I chimp all the time, and in a model shoot, its usually followed by a "dayum" :)

LCD turned off. I've always felt that the "playback" button was there for a reason. When I want - whenever I want, I review the shot if there is any reason to be concerned. Hit the button to check histogram and such whenever conditions or lighting change. Big reason is to also save considerable time on the battery.
And then there's the times when I feel like I've captured something I'm particularly proud of - and I'll chimp, chimp, chimp - all the way home.
Always felt that the term was created by that particular variety of insecure, unfriendly photographers ( ) that were desperately looking for some other way to "set themselves apart" and look down upon the rest of the "undesirous" population.
Sorry, just my personal opinion...
