Flying and Camera - 09-10-2007, 11:43 PM

Ok, I have a crazy question. I went dove hunting with my dad and brothers last weekend and while there I was taking photos of them shooting their guns. Well I am sure my camera has residue for the shooting and next week the wife and I are flying to Yellowstone. Question is, should I be worried about taking my camera on the plane? Or, what can I do to ensure my camera won't trigger any alarms when going through security?

I've only seen them swab the outside of bags, but I haven't flown in a while. At most, I'd think they'd want to give it a look and see that it operates as a camera, rather than a bazooka. Though, this is TSA (Thousands Standing Around) we're talking about. You might consider some stretching exercises for the cavity search.

Hi John,

I can just imagine the conversation with the airport security officer:

"Sir, what is that", "It's a camera", "What do you do with it" "I just shot some family members" "WHAT?" "Yeah I went hunting with my dad and brothers and I shot them"

Seriously, I kind of doubt the residues would be strong enough to trigger alarms, although I have never been in this situation<g>

Best regards,

Helps to keep the majority of any wires (chargers, sync cables, etc) in a seperate part of the bag or a different bag. Every time I throw all my wires in randomly I get searched, everytime I organize them I typically don't get searched.

They very rarely swab stuff. I've been swabbed a number of times, but it was back in the days when I used to carry film and asked for a hand check of my film and sometimes my equipment. I fly a lot, and I've never had them do that since I've been digital and just put my cameras and bag through the machine.

I fly all the time and have used my camera while shooting firearms (well, not at the exact same time). Never had a problem with it.
