Need wireless network assistance - 09-15-2007, 11:08 PM

If anyone is running a wireless network with AT&T (SBC Global) as their ISP, I could use a little guidance in getting set up with my Belkin router. The problem I'm having is obtaining an Internet connection through the router; it won't connect regardless of the settings. My modem is a Zoom ADSL X5 (modem/router combo).

Please disregard. I'm going to return the Belkin and get the wireless version of the Zoom.

I would go with NETGEAR for wireless. I purchased mine at Best Buy. It works great with my Mac setup.

We stick with Netgear or Linksys. I don't trust the others at this point. Too many failures.

If you still have trouble after getting the new router... call tech support, I don't remember all that I had to do when we set I set up mine, but after much pulling of hair (which I have little of) I gave in and called, they found the problem in my settings in about 3 minutes.

Guess I should have read the instructions :)

Canon gear all the way around, just toss in a bunch of other accessories and you have an addiction.

I was a dyed in the wool fan of Netgear until last year. I had 2 G Wireless routers that failed, and switched to Linksys, and haven't looked back. I've worked with Cisco products for years, and should have known better than to play with anybody else's gear.

Thanks, Todd. I have decided to try tech support first before returning the router.

I have like 5 Linksys routers, a couple of Buffalo ethernet bridges/wireless, and use Cisco stuff at my office... I am a fan of Cisco/Linksys equipment. Also, those little Buffalo bridges are extremely cool for linking non wireless devices to your wireless network.. Work great for $50.

Belkin Tech Support was a success. I am now running wireless. It turned out to be something in the setup wizard that wasn't working right. I had to access the router via browser to set a couple of things.

Already got 'er encrypted and password protected so I should be covered for the most part. There will always be hackers unfortunately.

I've seen to many problems with Belkins and Netgear, signal strength issues... D-link is usually what I get.

I'm not sure what my true signal strength is with my Belkin. I downloaded a Dashboard widget, which shows the signal to be weak. However, my Mac's indicator shows full strength. To top it off, my MB Pro drops the signal a few times during the day, which seems to be a huge problem since the most recent OS update (several threads over at Apple indicate the universal problem on the MB).

Wireless is nice and I use it when I want to relax and browse with the MBP on the couch, but any serious work is done on Ethernet. I have all LinkSys gear in my home network. One G plus wireless router, one G access point, and one wired gigabit switch. They all work well for the 4 computers and iPhone I use. My wireless is WPA2 with a very long key. It's a pain, but I keep a text file on my USB thumb drive for cut and paste when friends come over and need to connect. Turn on logging and review the access list every now and then if you want to find out how many other clients try to access your network. You might be surprised!
