I will ask dh when he gets home. He is an instructor with pepper spray and that other stuff that spec ops get sprayed with. As for the stun gun I wouldn't have a clue.

hey use both. Use the pepper spray that is an alcohol base and a stun gun and set the bad guy on fire.

My sisters live away from home and I get worried about them sometimes. | Hi Jarvis,
Sabre has a fairly stable history. The CS(tear gas) & OC(pepper) combo. They're sold at places like Gander Mountain, Carter's Country or similar gunshops. Different sizes for carrying around. http://www.sabrered.com/
It's not the answer to every situation but it's better than nothing.

Tasers will be or are now available at sporting goods stores. Why get up close and personnel when you can change someones attitude from 15 feet away!
I think I need one for the office.
from a news release
"The TASER C2 unit features the following capabilities:
* Up to a 15-foot range from the device conducting energy that
temporarily incapacitates an attacker by overriding sensory and motor
functions
* CheckLok public safety background check technology guaranteeing that
the device cannot be used until the purchaser successfully completes a
comprehensive background check
* A unique anti-felon identification (AFID) technology, which disperses
20-30 serialized pieces of confetti whenever a TASER Cartridge is
deployed to help prevent and track potential misuse
* A light, sleek, hand-held design that can fit in a pocket or a purse
* Available in four designer colors: Black Pearl, Titanium Silver,
Electric Blue, and Metallic Pink
* A safety cover and trigger design that users can easily operate with
their thumb" | | | |

No need for pepper spray if you have a stun gun. The ones that the MI state police use are 50,000 voits and they can shoot you with it up to 30ft. Also if you go up against two attackers you can "shoot" one with it and then "stick" the other attacker with the handle part. When you zap the second guy, naturally the first guy gets blasted again. They said it'll drop a 350lbs man to their knees with one jolt. I think it's a 5 second burst. I was told the longest 5 seconds of your life. I've seen people get sprayed with pepper spray, granted not your every day person per say, but it can just really piss someone off and make the situation worse for yourself.

Because of the way a stun/Tazer affects the nervous/muscular system of an attacker(s)body, I agree with posters that it's very effective but I wouldn't completely disregard the use of a chemical spray. Stun/Tazers do require some sort of practice to gain quick draw/aiming skills. If one misses with the darts, the person has to be prepared to have the target within arms reach in order to 'stick' him with the prod. Many of the sprays made to keep in a home or vehicle spray in a semi-wide cone to a distance of 10-12'. The bear sprays claim between 30-35'. Saturating an attacker with a CS/OC combo increases it's effectiveness vs single blasts. If a person has ever used hair, roach or mosquito-repellant spray, they're already a step ahead with a chemical spray system.
But they're right, it won't necessarily work on every single person (ex. a person on PCP). But even handguns don't necessarily stop people like that immediately. However, I have seen surveillance videos of people effectively defending themselves from attackers using a $12-14 CS/OC combo sprays when I use to work at the Harris County DA's office. Just like with anything else, have a back-up plan/defense.

But I've also watched a survellience video of a peace officer firing at least 5-6 rounds into the torso of a large man charging at him. Autopsy later showed 3 of those rounds had penetrated the PCP junkie's heart. On video, the guy still kept coming and had enough 'juice' to grab and punch the officer twice before he finally going down.
My thoughts are for many situations, some sort of defensive means is better than nothing. But it doesn't mean it'll cover absolutely all situations.

Best stuff out there is Fox Labs. 5 Million scoville heat units and UV dye for later identification.
It's available at a couple places around town or just order from here. It's a local company and usually gets all their orders shipped the day the order is placed.
I also recommend the Sudecon decontaminate wipes. If you have to use the spray, chances are that you'll get some on yourself. This will help lift the capsacion (sp?) out of the skin.
Personally, I recommend the 2 oz flip-top fogger.

To Jarvis, All of these are good suggestions but they are all worthless without proper training and practice. If you, or your sister, don't have the particular weapon you choose either in your hand or immediately accessible when you need it, it is pretty much just dead weight to carry around.
Also, I have been with trained police officers who tasered a suspect and either missed or one of the needles did not stick. If you do not have good contact with both needles, the taser is useless unless you use it as a stun gun. I have video of a sherrif's deputy spraying a suspect with Law Enforcement strength pepper spray repeatedly. The suspect beat the officer to the point of hospitalization. And there are stories of people surviving gunshot wounds long enough to do serious damage as well.
So, investigate all options carefully. Get well trained and be prepared. Take a safety awareness class and know what to look for and be alert to your surroundings. There is nothing better than prevention to keep you safe. Then carry what you are comfortable using with full understanding of its pros and cons.
And for those that misunderstand and think I'm against carrying something, I'm not. I carry two different handguns depending on the situation (a .40 or a .45) but rely much more on awareness and prevention to not need a weapon in the first place. Hope this helps!
Mike

It's an imperfect world and nothing works every time. Mike is right - If you're going to carry a weapon, you must learn to use it effectively. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
