MFAH- camera friendly? - 07-07-2005, 03:27 PM

I've seen people at the mfah with cameras, everytime I go. Obviously no flash photography, but what is the museum's stance? No photography? Think they would stop me if I walked in with a Nikon D2X and 17-55mm DX?

Thanks for all replys-

Cameras are allowed. I've taken mine in several times. Though you will not have complete freedom to photograph ALL exhibits. The ushers tell you usually if an exhibit is not to be photographed. If in doubt, ask them.

Yep, some exhibits are off limits to photography and flash is not allowed.

If you go to any of the membership desks you can pick up a large, white tri-fold pamphlet that has a map of the museum and listing of the exhibits. On the listings it will state whether photography is allowed or not for each exhibit. You will be surprised at how few places photography is allowed. It is not allowed, for instance, in the sculpture garden and I always see people taking pictures there. But I think the guards will be a lot more insistent within the museum itself.

Here it is - sorry if this is a bit late, we had to find a copy of the original policy.

Thanks everyone. I'm finally making it out to the museum after all this time! If not inside- the architecture of the Beck building is certainly photo-worthy.

I was out at the scuplture garden this past spring, and was asked by a guard to stop taking photographs. I had no idea the garden was off limits...especially considering it's an outdoor exhibit (I don't know why I think an outdoor exhibit should be camera friendly, but I do).

And I was the only person in the garden...oh well, c'est la vie.

Thumbs down arts != photography - 08-11-2005, 05:44 PM

Seems to me that Houston museums and exibitions are getting more and more photo-unfriendly. We went to MFA, looked at the brochure that showed where photography was allowed (at least they were nice enough to print them and not let pest-partol chase you down inside the museum) and did not go any further. Pretty much one floor of the old exibition in one building is available. The rest - off-limits.
Tried the Menil collection. 2 years ago they didn't care about the cameras (no flash or tripod though). Nowadays - no photos allowed, even in the hallway with no works of "art" in sight. Given that some of their exibits exibit really profound artistic thought (especially the shipping boxes on the wall and unnamed posts with crumpled paper), I wonder why it's getting more and more problematic to take pictures in Houston.

Just venting my disappointment. I'd be glad if anyone can point to a local gallery that allows photography.

the Metropolitan Museum in NYC has been pretty friendly to photography, though I haven't been there in a year
best always to check at the door
if they say no, don't go in
maybe they will get the message
