Do you know what you are? Myers-Briggs - 09-26-2007, 05:11 PM

Did an online personality test - turns out I'm an ENTP on the Myers-Briggs test. I was a bit shocked when I read this about "career choices". My photography business motto is "everything but weddings" - wow, I guess there's something to this personality stuff after all! This describes me to a 'T'.... - daylon

Interesting points about me:

1) love gadgets
2) got an advertising degree
3) non-conformist
4) aforementioned aversion to shoot weddings..

Now let's contrast this profession with one that is appealing to ENTPs: photographer. What is it about this job that makes it a good match for ENTPs?

Well, many photographers are self-employed, which has inherent appeal to ENTPs. If you're the boss, you don't have to do lots of things you're forced to do as an employee, such as go to long, boring meetings. Photography is a combination of art and science. There are few rules. Many ENTPs are non-conformists who chafe at rules and structure. Sure, there are laws of physics one must adhere to for properly exposed pictures, but the photographer has tremendous freedom in composing the picture. So the creative, improvising, rule-breaking part has free reign in many kinds of photography. Many ENTPs like technology and gadgets. Photography is full of both. Photography can provide variety and excitement, depending on the field. Wedding photography is probably lower on that scale, while advertising likely has a lot more. Many ENTPs enjoy interacting a great deal with people from all walks of life. Being independent and competent is often a goal for ENTPs. Innovation is quite appealing to them. Unlike our ISFJ friends, ENTPs generally dislike details and prefer to leave them to someone else. Instead, they tend to be more action-oriented and focused on the outside world of ideas. Starting new projects energizes them, and they are quite comfortable with complexity.

I recall doing an inservice on this at school a few years back. According to the online test I am a INTJ, sounds similar to what I recall from school.

we did this when it was all the rage at work back in the 90s. Turns out I (like most) can be different things depending on the circumstances. I forget what my particular results were (there were several), but most people with normal behavioral patterns will be more "borderline" rather than extremely oriented.

By training and profession, I am an Engineer and can easily slip into the highly organized (mentally at least), just-the-facts-m'am etc mode; but I can just as easily adjust when not at work to the more creative (my family is all artists), big-picture, leave the details to the subordinates attitude. I blend the extremes by favoring jobs that while technical in nature, are more creative in finding solutions, working with people and being a mediator/negotator rather than a finite detail expert.

You will find that most people are this way, to varying degrees. As a favorite boss once said not many people ride the fence as well as I....i think it was a compliment.

The Portrait of the Crafter Artisan (iStP)

The Crafter Artisans are not only concrete in speech and utilitarian in getting things done, they are also directive and attentive in their social roles. Though directive like their Promoter counterparts, their directiveness is leavened by a good deal of attentiveness and seclusiveness. They do not approach strangers readily, but once in contact do not hesitate to tell them what to do. And they can be quite forceful in this, such that others tend to do their bidding.

Like the other Artisans, Crafters live a life of artful action, but their particular nature is most easily seen in their mastery of tools of any and all kinds, from microscopic drill to supersonic jet, from potter's wheel to grand piano, from a camera to a clarinet. Sometimes Crafters will use their body as a tool. A tool is any implement that extends or varies our human powers -- vehicles, musical instruments, cutting devices, and weapons are just four of the many categories of the tools that surround us. Most of us use tools in some capacity, of course, but Crafters (only ten per cent of the general population) are the true virtuosos of tool work, with a natural ability to command tools, to bend them to their wishes, and to become adept at all the crafts requiring tool skills. Even from an early age Crafters are drawn to tools as to a magnet; tools fall into their hands demanding use, and they must manipulate them. Indeed, if a given tool, whether scalpel or earthmover, is operated with a precision that defies belief, that operator is likely an Crafter.

ENTP - the Field Martial Rational.

I have to admit, there was some truth in the description. Your membership cards are in the mail.

and I think if there were another 100 questions or so, the extroverted would have dropped down to 0. I don't think of myself as extroverted at all.
