Computer Fails - 09-28-2007, 08:24 AM

Yesterday was noooooooot a good one for me.

The short version of the story goes:

About 3 p.m. yesterday, a variety of problems started happening with my nearly 4-yr old desktop (purchased in Dec. '03). Program files started failing...and quickly.

After a reboot in safe mode, the system shut itself down and attempted a reboot of it's own. That didn't work, and I could hear the tell-tale sounds of a hard drive failure (which by the way, if you've never had that happen....imagine the sound of the FedEx engine in the ocean from the movie "Cast Away")

I immeadiately turned off the computer and took it to the Geeks at Best Buy where they confirmed my fears, the hard drive was hot to the touch, and that was before we even had plugged it it.

Short version..... so, I got a new computer yesterday. AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+, 2 gig ram, 400gb hard drive (not that I keep much on it)

The best news... the external hard drive with all of my photos on it suffered no ill effects. I haven't had any Photoshop problems as of yet.

AND... since it was a hardware failure of the hard drive, I can go buy a new hard drive for the old machine, and I also have the system disks... making the old system my "internet" system and keeping this one eventually isolated and for photo work.

Well... it's time to get back in the game.

I lost some photos to hard drive failure about a year ago. Most of them were personal photos, and it wasn't a lot, so no real heartache. As a result, though, I set up a RAID 5+1 (I think it's 5+1, don't remember... anyway it's RAID) to be safer. I should do a better job backing stuff up though. Hey at least you get a new machine out of the deal.

Sorry about the lost, but this is an excellent point to the story. I learned the hard way NEVER to have photos/files on the primary hard drive

Mine died a week ago Wednesday, but not HD failure, so I wa able to copy all my data to the new PC. I wiped the old drive too soon, because Saturday evening, I discoevred that a bunch of jpegs, Word docs and Excel spreadsheets had "disappeared" from the new PC. I have mine set to back up to the 2nd HD at 7PM each day.
