1st Rule of Electronics Troubleshooting - 09-29-2007, 07:54 PM

Mowing the yard this morning....MP3 player (Creative, 30GB Disk drive version) falls and smacks the concrete driveway.

Restart: nada
pull battery, restart: nada
pull battery and wait awhile, restart: nada
try some internal diagnostics: "Hard drive error"

more:

well, I do have na extra 20gb drive in the closet, it will fit, just need to get the OS

Go online to download OS: no longer supported:

think of how much it will cost to replace

(all files are backed up: )

take it apart to see if I can read the drive from the computer: nada

go to lunch, try to not mope too much, at which I'm fairly successful

come home, remember the 1st rule of electronic troubleshooting.

reinstall the MP3 hard drive, reboot: bingo

oh, yeah...just what is that 1st rule of electronic troubleshooting?

reseat all connectors.

Which I basically did by removing the drive and replacing it later.....

and for some reason, the 1st song that played when it started back up: ELO "Hold on Tight (to Your Dream)"

Is that a Creative Jukebox? I've got one with a 40GB HDD somewhere in my desk drawers!

I think it was called the Creative Nomad Jukebox. Came with an 8GB HDD and it was the largest capacity of any MP3 player at the time. It ran on 6AA batteries and gave you about 2-3 hours play time! I upgraded mine to 40GB but then got an iPod so it's been sitting in a drawer full of whatever it had at the time!

I actually liked the interface it had - you could build playlists, search, organize, and all from the player itself.

Mercifully, Jesus, mine is a bit newer...30GB drive, about 3-4 hours on a 3.5v lithium ion battery. But the interface isn't as advanced as the one you describe, all playlists have to be built on the PC and downloaded. Which is ok as I don't have any playlists.....

It's Creative Labs technically.....half the $$ and 50% more GB than the fruit-flavored player available at the time......

man glad it came back to life.

I just got my wife a 30 gig Creative Zen Vision W. I just got finished burning all her CD's to my PC and have them on her ZEN. Its wide scree is awesome for video and for photos. It has a CF slot and can be configured for external storage. for short trips this should replace the need for my laptop.
