I just wish for once the hard drive manufacturers would label the after format size instead of the before format size.

Still. Price looks pretty good. I'll have to keep and eye on that.

Based on 447 out of 480gb on one of my systems, that drive should have 931gb available after formatting.

Computers use binary numbers and manufacturers use decimal so take the drive capacity and divide by 1.024 and you get close to the actual

1000/1.024 = 976.5625

My Terrabyte drives storage drives show 976.98 so there may be some rounding in play by manufacturers.

931GB give or take.

I found a web page that explains how this works if anyone is interested. Keep in mind that windows formats a hard drive and creates a system partition the takes up some of the available space that further reduces the amount you see in a system check.

I don't know that I would want that much storage as an internal drive....

'Course, I'm a bit scared of everything computer right now after losing my internal hard drive last week. Lucky for me, everything important (photos) were on an external.

You can always take these and stack them in a raid array but if you had the space for them, it is cheaper to get 5tbs of storage by getting 11- 500gb drives in a raid 5 than it is for 6 - 1tb drives in a raid 5 and not by an insignificant amount either, but if you have a finite number of slots, then always better to go big!

A 12 slot shelf will now hold 11tb of stuff. That is impressive!

Nevermind -- I'll take care of it myself!

They were having the latest WD 1TB for $259 until it's back ordered for the last couple week. It's a much better drive than Hitachi 1tb...

and by the way, the future is unknown with Hitachi storage division.

For sensitive data, I'd stay away from these drives. As a matter of principle I wouldn't go higher than 400GB on any single drive.

I have read horror stories about how 500GB+ drives are actually multiple platters / internal controllers that do hardware raid and if the drive is lost, it's 100% uncrecoverable. (for those that don't know what I'm talking about, there are companies that specialize in recovering data from "bricked" harddrives)

It may cost more, but if you really want a TB (or close) of storage, it's better to get 8x250GB drives and raid them 0+1 (stripe / mirror). While you still risk data loss, as long as you know your raid config, these specialized companies can recover that data for you. Most of the time.

With the above referenced drives, you don't know how they're configured, therefore you can't relay that to the specialist.

Of course, backups (multiple hot/cold) are always recommended too.
