Need Someone With InDesign - 10-04-2007, 03:47 PM

Does someone out there with a copy of Adobe InDesign answer a question for me? I have a couple of documents that I need to edit, but they were originally created in InDesign. Can you use InDesign to convert it to another, editable format such as a MS Word or Publisher doc?

No, I am not interested in any "deals" or "trial copies" for InDesign.. I'm looking for a legit way out of this mess.

Editable PDF is the clean way of doing it. As far as i know, it will not take images with it if you convert to ms word.

I'm not worried about images, I'm worried about text and the formatting of it. Its too much to cut and paste from a PDF.

You can export to word format, but it's limited to text only and you'll lose much of the formatting.

Your best bet would be to export to pdf and edit in a program like Illustrator. Just make sure the export is done at the highest quality, without flattening, and without the text being converted to outlines.

Yea.. that's not an answer I like either... so I guess exporting from the PDF to Word will be my best bet.... bah.

(I don't have any of these programs, I don't pirate software, and I am not getting paid enough on these jobs to buy it.)

I put "trial" in quotes because people have offered me cracked versions of things in the past to use as a "trial."

You can export it as a EPS format which can be operned in photoshop if that is an option. I have InDesign at work adn could try exporting it for you. You'll need to catch me before noon as I am taking off this afternoon and don't have access at home.

Well, the real question is can you convert it to something like Word or Publisher.. beyond those options, I might as well export it as a PDF and cut and paste, then reformat it. Hate that idea, but its better than retyping it all from scratch, I suppose.

That's why we get paid the big bucks, right?

(What? I'm not getting paid? Damn.)

You can export to XML or XHTML though I do not how publisher will react to that. I built a flyer at work and the exported it EPS to use photshop at home for a school project and it worked fine. The document is fully editable using photshop. I tried taking it to a pdf and that looked fine but when I exported from a pdf to word I lost all formatting. Someone else may be better with how to go that route.

If you have to have it in Word or Publisher, you're gonna have to do the piece meal conversion you just described from pdf. InDesign does a great job taking Word files into InDesign, but not the other way around.

The bad thing with a convert to pdf is that it breaks the text down in to short segments that are only several words long. Adding or deleting text won't change the whole the whole page only the short text segment leaving you with a hole or pushing text thru the next segment. I've done small edits on pdf's in Illustrator and it is a real pain. The only real option I see is to have someone copy the text out of InDesign and pasting into a Word document. I don't think there is any way to take the formatting with it.
