Alpine Carousel, Orbiter? Wagon Wheel, European Taxi's, Sky Cars, Space Needle, Bamboo Shoot. The island in the middle of River of No return, was a location some employees went off to smoke pot or make out. There was an section of the mountain (Alpine Ride) that stayed pretty cool and was a make out place. Worked there for two years full time, 78-80. We called it era of the "Killer Train". Two guys tried to sneak in and when one jumped a fence he didn't know it was 25' down to the train tracks, he was high and after the fall never knew the train was coming.

Wow Robert... you worked there back in the day... very cool.

I stumbled across a few sites with some very old photos and scans of old park maps etc..

pretty cool.

Anyone remember the Texaco-sponsored 'antique' car ride? We used to love ramming eachother in those things.

Man, is that film from the late 60's early 70's? What strikes me is the images from Sky Car and Tower rides is all the empty land around Astroworld at the time!

I never rode the ones at Astroworld, but they had the same ones at Six Flags. I always loved "jamming" on the gas and then reaching outside the car to pull the brake lever that the employees used (because it stopped you MUCH faster than the one in the car) laying down a small trip of rubber! It was even better if someone was close behind you!

My family and I decided this year that we were tired of Dallas and San Antonio and would go to Astroworld. It has been many years since we were there. When I started to do a little research for the trip, surprise!

Look kids! Over there! That's called the Astrodome. Legend has it that the fabled Houston Astros played baseball inside there. Ooohh.

That last ride looks Apocalypse Now.
