WOULD you - 10-17-2007, 07:13 PM

Would you be the ART/Marketing Director for an Indy film for no up front pay but were promised 10 percent of the gross. That includes any thing that the film makes from awards, dvd's , theaters, to cable.

I am kinda tempted to say yes. I don't have the job yet but it would be fun and talk about getting some great portfolio work out of the deal and an IN to a whole other world. The great thing about it is that most of the more is done via the net. Of course I would have to arrange shoots and put together every thing that is for print and advertising.

I am getting the script in a couple days so I will know more then. I have to come up with a direction to take the marketing and art work for the second round of interviews. I will say this for an Indy work they are very professional. For the second round of interviews I really need to have some good questions about what I need to do and how things are paid for. I am not putting any money out for this project. I don't pay to work. I will wager my time and talent but not my own cash.

So, in other words you mean for free?

I'd do it if I wanted, but would not expect any pay, ever.

Personally I wouldn't do it. Projects that promise money in the end often don't make -any- money at all. Unless it's something that you're passionate about and are ok with doing for free, I wouldn't bother - because most likely nothing will come of it.

My husband has worked has a sound man on 2 Indy films. Thankfully, he was paid in both cases. If he had been promised a percentage of profit he may of made something on 1 of them, though not much, and nothing on the other.

Doing the art and marketing will give you something to put in your portfolio and give you bragging rights so you can say you have worked on a film. But I wouldn't count to much on making very much if any money of it.

To be clear - 10% of the gross? Gross profit, or gross income?

Sounds exciting, but as stated you can't put that big question mark in your checking account and buy groceries with it. That being the case, you probably want to make sure you don't endanger other solid income streams or a chance at one to work on a questionable source. OTOH, if you're not doing anything else at the moment, why the heck not?

I had a bunch of friends in that movie "Slacker" and nobody thought it would get as famous as it did, so you never know. This is Austin after all, if it's "Indy" enough, it may get some notice, and your gamble could pay off. If not, just make sure you didn't sacrifice anything more than your time.

You did not say whether you thought this film might have a chance of success. Do you have any idea of the story line, or any details that make you think this thing could get a decent run? Obviously they are trying to do this as cost effectively as possible, but are they going to cut corners in other areas as well, thereby possibly undermining some of the chances that it might have for success.

Before I invested too much time or energy for free, I would investigate as deeply as they will let you... Although it never hurts to interview and get the offer, only to make your choice at that time.

I finally got to read the script today. It's an interesting idea. granted I read a draft and would love to know just how close that draft is to the final project. It's an interesting idea but seems to need some polish.

speaking as an advertiser I would think about changing the title. If this project is done right I could see it making some money. There still is a lot to talk about and yes you are all right I am not going to give up working to do this. There is no way. So far it sounds like this project wont take off for a while and they are trying to get some people together before they really get started.
