Ok, I have Mcafee running on some PC's and Panda Software on others, but I need something new...I know there is rarely one product that successfully does it all - virus, spyware, spam, etc... but what works best for you?

I have used Norman (not Norton) for about 6 years now...recommended by the computer guy. It has been excellent. I have got one virus in those 6 years. I keep my computer on all the time. I use adaware for spam and that is it...and I have 4 kids getting on the computer all day every day...it is amazing we don't have problems more often...( and if I have a problem now for bragging....I'm goin' to hurt someone!!!!)

This one seems quite popular among some professionals (IT techs, web developers & designers, etc.) that I know. I used their free version (AV only) for a while and like it.

Oh, yeah, I use Trend Micro. Never any issues with it at all.

AVAST -- I have not tried it but hear it is OK
AVG -- I have tried it and it was OK
CA eTrust -- I have used it on 2 of my machines for many years and no problems yet
Norton -- Tried it for a couple of years but gave up because of performance issues
ZoneAlarm -- No virus problems but had performance issues on one of 3 laptops
Trend Micro -- Use it on 1 Vista machine and 1 xp laptop with no issues and good performance

I did my own research last year on this subject. After reading many review sites I found the following three anti-virus programs in the top 5 of nearly every review. I agree with John..AVG is the best FREE anti-virus program out there. STAY AWAY from the consumer crap like Norton & McAfee. Both will kill your system resource. They have all sorts of programs constantly running in the background. Although, McAfee's corporate version is very good but also very expensive.

BitDefender

Kaspersky

NOD32

I used Avira the free version for a while, then bought a license for $25 a year. Never have any problems yet.

AVG if you want a free one, if you want something good but not free NOD32.

AVG is good for virus.

We use Symantec enterprise here at work, and it does ok.

The best recommendation I can make for email filtering is to find a way to get your own domain, and then have those emails filtered through postini. Kills spam completely, and has had less than a 1 % false positive -- actually much less than a 1%. It is also kept up to date with the ability to sweep for virus emails as well. I have yet to see a spam filter perform even close to as well as postini does.

thanks for the great info....
I needed something I could install on at least 4-5 PC's and Panda's license allowed me to do up to 3 and Mcafee allowed 2-3 as well, but the price keeps going up so I'm looking for alternatives. We use Trendmicro at work and I like their online scan, but never heard anything about their software until I started here...

At home I'm running three desktops and one laptop. On all I have ZONE ALARM, AVG Anti-virus, Ad-Aware and Spy Bot Search and Recovery.

All work fine, no performance issues.

I have been using AVG on my PC's with good results, but the best thing to do is just ditch the PC and get a Mac. I have been using macs for at least 12 years and have never had anything remotely close to a virus problem on any of them, and none of them had any anti-virus software installed.

I will eventually get a Mac, but I would still need something to protect the family PC's (can't afford 5 Mac's at once )
