Graphics card reccomendation for my new iMac - 10-19-2007, 04:15 PM

My wife and I are looking into purchasing a new iMac through the Apple online store via educational discount (through Baylor University). We currently own two PC's but had the opportunity to try out the iMac at the Best Buy in College Station and fell in love with it in an instant. We decided to build our own iMac online and have come up with the general spec's that we want:

1) 250GB Hard Drive
2) 2GB RAM
3) 20 Inch monitor

What I would like to know is whether or not I should spring for the second model iMac that has an ATI Radeon HD 2600 (256MB memory) vs. the lower priced model with the ATI Radeon HD 2400 (128MB memory). I won't be using the mac for gaming; just for photo editing via CS3, so I'm not sure if the performance differential will be noticeable. The 2600 also has a base hard drive of 320GB, which I don't really need because of the fact that I already own two mac compatible external hard drives totalling 1TB. We are on a pretty tight budget, and 1600 bucks seems like I'd be breaking the bank. Does anybody have any reccomendations? Should I wait for OS X Leopard to come out before ordering? Is it possible to order the iMac with the 2600 and get the 250GB (possibly by calling the company directly)? Any tips or hints you could provide would be very much appreciated!

Casey

Get the better grfx card. Buy your memory aftermarket and install yourself (it's a breeze). Wait for Leopard- it's only a week away!

And from what I see the 20" iMac w/ the 2.4ghz C2D, 320gig HD and a gig of ram is $1499 for the regular folks so I'd imagine your education discount will knock off 10%. If you visit the Apple Store in The Woodlands Mall where I used to work, ask for Nick- he'll help you out. :)
