Another computer issue - 10-24-2007, 02:39 PM

So my computer has crashed a couple times recently, and when it crashes some strange code appears across the screen. Any of you computer savvy individuals out there know what this text means. It's a 1.67 Ghz Power PC G4 Powerbook, in other words, a Mac.
thanks

There's your problem. You aren't reading TexasPhotoForum. Abel fixed all of our computers to do this when you go to another site.

(Sorry I can't be more helpful). I'd be reasonably surprised to see a unix kernel crash that isn't hardware related somewhere along the line. Potentially bad memory or something.

if you can run any diagnostics, it'd be worth doing.

The technical mumble from Apple forums:
"KP reports an "invalid pmap" which is referring to the Port Mapper (PMAP) protocol which manages the allocation of transport layer ports. In short (and overly simplified but, on target, I believe), if one processor doesn't flush it's cache properly, the other processor could stumble into/over a previously used, yet presumed open frame, causing a crash. RAM not being properly cleared could also cause this"

But like Gordon said, a flash card drive, external harddrives, PCI cards, USB flash drives can all be the causes...then check RAM(Hardware Test Disk, run twice to double check ram). Try running without any peripherals for a while and see if you get another crash.

Funny thing you say to run without peripherals, normally in my office I have an external drive with a Firewire and USB hub, card reader, wireless trackball, two printers, two scanners, and a Palm dock all connected. But when this latest crash happened, I was just sipping my morning tea in the house with nothing connected at all, just on battery. Must have been the Pentax forum that did it.
I ran the hardware test recently, maybe the last time this happened? But I didn't run it twice. I'll try that.

Well sounds like a tough one to find the exact cause then. In that case I would reset the PRAM just to be sure.
Good luck...thanks for posting...its been a while since I've worked in tech support so its always fun to try to help.
