this is supposed to be the years largest and brightest full moon due to the closeness to earth,"as much as 14 per cent wider and 30 per cent brighter than lesser full moons "

so go have a look see and compare your earlier full moon shots to the ones you get tonight

It looked brighter last night while we were out walking the dogs. I thought it was just my eyes. LOL

Not James, but here is what I've learned makes a good moon shot:

- First and foremost, use a tripod
- Aperture around F8 (revised after looking at my EXIF)
- Low ISO (shot mine at 200)
- Fill the frame as much as possible
- Use spot metering if possible
- Shoot in Manual mode, bracketing your exposures
- Have fun with it :-)

I'm not James, but 1/2 of the sunny 16 rule applies pretty well for proper exposure of a fully lit moon. and If I remember from my limited experience, a moon that is about 1 inch above the horizon is close to a stop down from that. So while it still has some yellow and orange in it, you are nearly 2 stops down from the sunny 16 rule, and when it is fully white, you are 1 stop down from 16.

Nevermind -- I'll take care of it myself!

Settings?? yes use them
Lenses are good to use, you may want to use a camera as well.

Make sure the camera and lens are both pointed at the moon

Seriously though I usually use a wide variety of settings so I can merge multiple photos (10 or more).

The full moon will not reveal a lot of nice detail as its washed out and not many shadows (depending on angle of the sun to the moon) so I use some fast shutter speeds to get darker exposures and slower speeds to bring out the high lights, merge them and get an even exposure.

Typically I use an f4 to f8 and ISO 200

Beside fun shooting the moon can be a money maker. Sold this shot to a major publication and it was one of my first attempts at photographing the moon. AV, ISO 200, and f/8.

How'd you make the moon so big? Did a telephoto lens bring it "closer"? The moon looks unnaturally large. I've never seen it this big with the naked eye.

Well my camera is equipped with a 1000 megasquirtle light sensitive array with a megakilo double widget interface and a pseudo-terrafilter. its got 2 million hexafurtles with a 10 kiloplex and a rechargeable virtual combo-backplate. i also fitted an optical fillyfangle with predictive threshold histogram monitoring. it also has a light sensitive light meter and a time sensitive shutter mechanism.

The size of the moon was enhance by the publication for the cover and to emphasize the story behind it.
