I'm thinking about having Lasik Surgery done, and losing the glasses. I know that the procedure is now mature and there aren't many problems, but it still scares me to death. For those that had it done, who would you recommend I talk to in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area?

I've considered it also, but if you are older it can have its drawbacks (even if the procedure corrects you to 20/20 or better)
Example; I'm nearsighted and can read fine without any glasses. With distance correction, I have to wear bi-focals to read. If I wear my contacts, I have to wear reading glasses to read.
See where this is going.., If I have Lasik, I will always need reading glasses to read.
Right now between no glasses, glasses w/bifocal and contacts w/reading glasses I get to pick and choose which is best for daily schedule.
While I prefer contacts, If I am going to do something that would require the reading glasses quite a bit, I'd just as soon wear the glasses w/bifocal.
I know what I've said probably doesn't help, but it does give you a different perspective.

Ken, I'm 32 so I'm hoping your problem is not one I have to experience, or at least until the next 20-30 years.
My main concern is that I don't want to go to a place that treats you like cattle, and just herd people through the doors. I'd like some personalized service, but at the same time I do want to go to an established place that knows what they are doing.

David,
I'm only 46.., and first needed bi-focal when I was about 42. It's a common occurence in the just over forty crowd. You might gain some insight into when it will potentially happen to you by talking to your parents or older siblings.
In the meantime, you could have 8+ years of optical bliss.

David a few things that you WILL need to understand before you have it done is that after the surgery your eyes wont be perfect 100 percent of the time for the first few months. You COULD see halos around lights, star bursts, one morning you will wake up and one eye will be blurry and the other will be clear, the next morning it is the other eye! One morning you may wake up with perfectly clear vision and then next not. BUT IT IS ONLY During the adjustment period! You could also potentially need fake tears for a few weeks after as well. Because your eyes WILL dry out. But it is all temporary. They eventually do clear up 100%

I had it done about 5 years ago in Houston and do not regret it.
My only complaint, and it was not something to foresee, was that I found out I was allergic to Valium while getting it done. They give a valium to help relax you, then do the procedure. As soon as they finished I passed out and had a seizure. My eyes rolled back, not something that should be done after having them flapped.
Overall it came out OK (they were able to straighten the folds).

Glad it turned out well for you after all.

I've looked in Lasik and rejected it. Instead, I'm going to save up and get interocular contact lenses. They basically put contact lens in your eye. Completely reversbiel too if you for some reason change you mind. And if your eyes do get worse 10 years later, you can get newer lenses put in.
If you're going to read up on this, make sure you read about interocular contact lens. The reason I stress the contact is that there is another surgery that sounds a lot like it that is not reversible.

For me it has been about 8 to 9 years. I am back to wearing glasses a lot of the time, especially for distance. But my lenses are nothing like the half-inchers I used to wear.

I had it done three years ago and don't regret it. However your eyes still age so it does not prevent you from needing reading glasses as you get older.

This may sound ridiculous, but my biggest question is how do they keep you from sneezing? I think it's physically impossible to sneeze without closing your eyes. Even if they have things to hold your eyelids, you'd move slightly, involuntarily. And just because I'm on valium doesn't mean I won't sneeze (or does it?) My husband is going to have custom intralase done in January so I told him to ask this question at the next appointment, LOL. The thought of having lasik scares the cra* out of me. But then again I don't have the daily hassle of contacts and glasses... yet.

I do have to put this in there because no one told me...my vision wasn't that bad before but I needed contacts and got sick of putting them in and out all the time. After my Lasik, I ended up with an astigmatism, which I didn't have before in my left eye. It makes my vision not as clear so it doesn't seem like I have 20/20 althought technically I do. On my 2 year visit last month the Dr. told me 20/20 with a strain :( then that's not 20/20! And so therefore he won't re-do it. I will DEF. keep up with my follow ups because then if something happens it gets redone for free-I know many people who don't keep up after 5 years or so, then wish they had! They told me in advance I would need reading glasses later in life which I am fine with. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
