I'm in the same boat here. I work on an AF base.. and our network is locked down pretty tight. I actually have to use a "back-door" to get to this site (good thing about working next to the shop that does the blocking.. lol)
All forums, chats, public e-mail, photo sharing, sports.. etc - all blocked! Even though I can get to this forum - I can't see any pics that are hosted on photobucket.. it's blocked at a higher level...

Lot's of sites get blocked in Company firewalls because the company wants the employees to be working while at work and not surfing photographic websites or forums. This is a serious problem for the business community now days, so I don't blame them trying to protect their legitimate business interests. But then I hear people say, well if I'm on break, I should be able to surf where I want. But keep in mind that you are doing this on a company computer, owned by them. Also keep in mind that if you were on a site that might have a scantily clad or even nude model, that if another employee saw it, they might file a complaint and this can expose the company to liability (sexual harrassment cases have been built on no more than this). There are all sorts of risks to the business that does not make sure that their computer are under proper control.
Cheers,
Roger

I work in web development - I justify my surfing as "monitoring network connectivity"... and actually I can point out a proxy/firewall/network issue to the right folks quicker than someone else out on the base.. so it has adverted some major issues before most people were aware. And the helpdesk always prefers to be able to tell folks - "we're aware of the problem and technicians are currently working the issue" than - "oh really - it's not working??"
(my story and I'm stickin to it )
And I am very aware of the sites that I go to.. I won't even go into the Human Form section from here for the reasons you pointed out above... I save viewing those for later at home

This is a serious problem for the business community now days, so I don't blame them trying to protect their legitimate business interests. | I've worked in environments that block and don't block web usage.
I've noticed in environments that block, productivity does not go up, but rather goes down. People find excuses for whatever they can to get out of doing work, or to at least do it half-way. They take excessive "breaks" and overall productivity goes down, morale goes down, and workflow goes down.
The company I'm working at now does not care if I surf the web the entire day, as long as my responsibilities are handled as they come up. As long as work gets done, management has told us in meetings that we can talk on our cell phones, do situps, or anything else, barring lewd or disruptive behavior to other workmates. Everyone in our department has a much higher morale, better attitude, and stays focused much better when work needs to get done. I believe this is because we're having "fun" when there is no work to do. When work comes up, we're much more enthusiastic to get the job done so we can go back to having "fun".
Compare that to someone who has to sit in front of the desk doing NOTHING waiting for the next pile of "work"... I doubt they'll be jumping enthusiastically on that "pile" because once they finish it, they'll just be waiting again, for yet another pile. Kind of depressing, and bad for performance and morale! (I've been in such a position before.)
I understand why upper management would decide block web access, but then again, not really, when I have seen a decrease in overall work performance by employees. Employees have to feel comfortable and be able to have some fun and freedom to get the most amount of work done.
This can be seen at companies like Google which offer so many perks on-the-job.

My company doesn't block all web access, but they do block quite a few sites that have even somewhat suggestive content. As Roger pointed out it doesn't have to actually be pornographic to cause trouble if the wrong person walks by and gets offended. So many people are just looking for a reason to sue and companies have to protect themselves.
