Yep that grinds!
Couple things you could try...there is a reset switch and a manual turn screw type thing on the bottom. Unclog what you can, give it some full turns with a tool if you can, reset the switch.
Just because it smells doesn't neccesarily mean its burned out. Our old one use to get stuck almost every week. The wife would turn it on and the lights would dim in the house and it would get stuck and smell like its burning.
We did have to eventually replace it.

Oh thanks Osy I will tell dh to try it as I don't want to climb under the sink lol, it will give him something to do to stay away lol. I will let you know if they work or not. I hope we don't have to replace it as we have so little time left here.

Tip cut up the squash a little better next time apparently it can't handle half a squash lol

Breezy, assuming that the manual turning and reset gets it going again, I found some GREAT little screens for the sink drains BEFORE it gets to the disposal that I think have helped my home drains immensely! They were only like $1.25 each at Walmart..

DAMNIT
it just keeps getting better, now we apparently owe the Navy 877 dollars!!!
And they want it NOW but they have owed us $150 for over 2 years and have yet to see it.

Thanks Bruce I will look for them next time I go to walmart.

You can also try the end of a broom handle inserted into the disposal and see if you can manually turn it. That can loosen it, if it is stuck. You may have to scoop out the junk first to see in there as well. Its no fun.

If you replace it, you may denote what kind you have when you go shopping. The last time I replaced ours I went back to Sears. I got a new one with more power, ugg ugg, but it used the same mounting collar. That meant it was much easier to install and I had less of a chance of a leak. If you're still set to move, you probably don't want to upgrade it though.

And have you asked the Navy if they'll accept some squash puree for a part of that bill?

I had to do the rest button and manually turning ours 2 months ago.

Also my wife is famous for trying to "dispose" of items that do not "blend" well so our pipes clog up form time to time. Large amounts of potato and potato skins wont go far in the pipes. Im a pro at un-clogging it now.

Wouldn't it be easier to use a blender or a kitchen to cut up your squash? Not to mention it gets all gunky in the disposal. I guess if you boil it long enough it cleans up... My disposal died 2 weeks ago... for no apparent reason. I rarely use it.

Hehe I put chicken skin down our always have for 12 years now and only had a problem in Navy housing lol.
Dh bitches at me all the time "that isn't supposed to go down there" lol
Oh well we are good so far.
It shouldn't be edible if it can't go down a disposal at least that is my opinion

Haha I wish it was for that cause then I would just buy them another lol
Unfortunately somebody here is a dumbass. As we asked about it about 6 months ago, dh was assured it was ours to keep blah blah blah, now all of a sudden OOOPS we made a mistake.
We even left it in the account for 5 months just switched it over to pay a bill, guess that is what jinxed us lol

Know that feeling. A few months after arriving at Ft. Meade I didn't get a pay check (1977). I called Crystal City - their reply - you're not supposed to get a pay check.

Seems there were so many erasures in my pay record there were holes. ZERO paychecks for 2.5 months. Then another 18 months for them to straighten it out. It took a call from the deputy comptroller to get them moving. One month later they withheld the pay increase for PO1 because they could read the data they were erasing.

Wife took the DK course and after that she would counsel and speak on behalf of some of the troops. She got so fierce that while we were in Rota just the mention that she would help the troop got disbursing in a tizzy.

Some things never change.

We know what you're going through and sympathize. Good luck.
