Collecting photos as art - 11-01-2007, 08:04 PM

I was wondering if someone might point me to a resource that gives tips on how to buy photos as art.

For example, do photogs usually do limited runs? Is there anything that gives the photo you buy any value, as something one has collected?

The annoying thing was that there is a photographer that I admire, who advertises he sells photos through a NY gallery that has a website. So I emailed them about a particular photo for more info. I never got a reply. Maybe something in my photo communicated I was oblivious, ignorant, and poor?

Any help would be appreciated.

My dad almost bought some of Alfred Eisenstadt's personal copies of some of his pics. They all had his caption written in china marker and when and where it was printed.

Time was selling them.

He decided not to, despite my deepest objections. :(

Most collectors will say to collect what you like, buy quality, and enjoy it. Buying for investment takes all the fun out of it. It's nice to make money from it, but shouldn't be the main reason for buying art. After all, to make money you'll have to part with it.

send another email, or just call them.
