Mom & Dad have 2 trees in the San Antonio (planted 1955) and so far have harvested over 15 boxes (the boxes that office copy paper comes in). They were so thick in the grass that it felt like walking on very large marbles.....

That doesn't count the 2 smaller trees in the front yard.

The fruit is a bit smaller than normal, and there are more duds than normal. Most duds look normal but are way under developed inside. More than a few are just plain empty. It's weird.

Some of the bumper crop may be due to the fact that between dad and his neighbors, they have "taken out" (by trapping or other means...) over 150 squirrels.

My mom has three tree in her backyard near the medical center here in SA. the houses were built in the 60's - so I assume the trees are about that old.

She was soooo sad a couple of months ago because with so much rain this summer - the pecans were so plentiful and heavy that with every strong wing - she had limbs breaking off.

But now that they are falling - she has already sent over 100 pounds to get cracked, and the trees are still coated in them and the ground still covered. I think her highest count so far has been a lil over 300+, and it looks like she's on track for another one of those years.

~~
funny story...

As kids growing up we never thought about pecans.. they were just always there. We always had some in the freezer to use year round. The thought of buying them had never crossed my mind.

Fast forward a few years - I got married and we were stationed up in WA state. We had been there about 4 months and I decided to make some brownies. I walked to the store next door to pick up some pecans - because I had never had brownies or cookies without them. Imagine my SHOCK when I saw the prices!!!!!

I paid the $7 for the 1/4lb of halves, and whined the whole way home. Picked up the phone and called Mom and told her. She laughed at my naiveté .. and fed-ex'd me some fresh pecans the next day. Too late for that batch of brownies, but still there for future cooking adventures...

in the store, they are nasty, usually from last year's crop.

BTW: they are pe-CONs, not pe-CANs

Here we Row-de-oh, we don't row-day-oh.
