Hmm... should we just report this thread now or wait for the inevitable political statements?
Edit: too late

To avoid any political argument I will not further participate in this thread. This is to prevent back-and-fourth bickering that results in closures. Thanks.
P.S. It's hard not to be political when political-esque articles are posted!

What's political about this? He was arrested doing what we do... photography. Do we have to have political discussions or can we discuss something of this nature relating to our hobby or job?

The right to photograph things on public property without profit or gain is a valid discussion, though it may be political slightly.... it's totally photography related. It's not like I'm discussing Bush, Religion, War or something else. I was simply discussing our rights and how our rights (or lack thereof) effect our photography.
But then again, chances are someone will take such said discussion as political talk, many people would in fact, and report this thead and have it deleted, so that is why I edited my post.
So as above, consider this post the last for real this time.

Well that makes sense. To make a statement like that would raise the political issue. But the rights are the same as they were years ago. Police didn't like you photographing them 20 years ago just the same as they don't today.
The police department realized they were wrong and corrected it however they could. As a photographer you can take pictures from public property in most occasions. This is one of them.

There are occasions, but I believe that it has to be clearly posted.. at least if I remember it correctly. I've seen signs like that before "photography prohibited from this point" for instance..... but they are rare.
The incident itself is important for those of us engaged in street type photography to be aware of... and its nice to see the ACLU sticking up for the rights of this guy (without getting into my personal opinion about the ACLU). I don't think it would be too political to point out that what we need is public education of what IS allowed -- especially in our uniformed police and hired security.
This incident, though, it appears that the police were less concerned about whether the photographer was a threat to the public and more concerned about him being a threat to THEM (as in their careers).... ironically, their actions did far more damage to their careers than photography of a bad arrest under a invalid warrant would have done.

Aren't supposed to photograph military installations even from a public area. I do this all the time. I guess I will be labeled a threat to the country by some. | | | |

As has already been mentioned, places where signs are posted. Military installations. what can be labeled as terrorist targets. As a handful of people on this site about the legalities of photographing even remotely close to train tracks!

More then anything, this thread lets us all know what is and isn't okay to do.... photographing police arresting someone on public ground, is totally okay to do. Incase anyone was wondering.....
