Scott Kelby's 7 Point System for Photoshop CS3 - 11-14-2007, 07:36 AM

I'm only into the second chapter on this book, and this is one that I'd highly recommend.

If you're looking for guided tutorials on a digital workflow that works, this book is a must. Scott, in is usual and unique way, presents "what really works".

Also, one video podcast to check out is "Understanding Adobe Photoshop". Two recent episodes also delt with a (9 step) workflow.

I just picked up the 7 piont book today and am wondering why I waited so long to do so? CS3 has so much to offer but it is all usless if your do not know the right way to work it. This book is making bells go off in my head.

I figured I'd do a follow-up as I recently finished the book (except for the last tutorial, which is supposed to be done 2-3 months after completing the rest).

The information from the book has allowed me to go back and look at some of my older shots, and apply corrections that I didn't know could be done. If I were to name the two best things I've learned:
1. How powerful Camera RAW really is, and how it can be used to first fine tune an image before going into Photoshop
2. Using LAB to control color intensity/saturation (without going into overkill).

As a side note, I also just picked up The Digital Photography Book, v2. Out of all of the books that I've purchased on the "how to" of photography, vol's 1 and 2 are probably the best, and I think MUST HAVE'S in your camera bag. Add to that Understanding Exposure.

While I appreciate some humor, I do wish they'd dispense with the banter and focus more on the teaching. They'd cover a lot more that way.

I don't care much for Kelby's books or 'teaching' style. It's too much 'how to' and not 'why to.' As for RAW, if you want to learn the real power of RAW in ACR get THIS.

Personally, I like Kelby's books. I've had his CS2 book for a while and just received the CS3 book. I've already learned new "tricks". His 7 point system just shipped yesterday from Amazon.

I recommend any of Kelby's books, Ive only read the first lesson of the 7 step book. That first lesson alone helped me fix a nice wheel stand shot from the drag strip that had a bunch of smoke still in the air in front of the car. It offered a better solution to bring the car detail back than just adding black/contrast in fact I sold a 16x24 print of that fixed photo today and it was gonna be a throw away.
