The people of Childress TX - 11-20-2007, 03:06 PM

This town really impressed me this weekend.

Sat. morning, I took off from Amarillo with my dad and my grandpa to Arlington to stay with my brother and to see the Cowboys play the redskins. We decided to stop in Childress for breakfast and I realized that I had my wifes keys in my pocket. I freaked out. I did not have time for a four hour detour. The waitress at the restaurant offered to take the keys to Amarillo that afternoon, but I just didn't feel comfortable doing that. I drove to what they told me was the bus station in hopes of putting them on a bus to Amarillo, but they were closed. I was just going to bite it and drive the two hours back to Amarillo. We stopped at Stanley Ford to see if I could get a little air in my tires. I mentioned to the lady, I think her name was Judy, what was going on as the service guy was checking my tires. I called my wife and our neighbor had offered to bring her to Childress to pick them up. I ended up leaving the keys with Judy and everything went fine...but everyone I came in contact with was great!

And next time I leave town, I'll check my pockets.

It's not like it doesn't happen in other towns and all, or other states for that matter, but this is the reason that I love Texas!

Nevermind -- I'll take care of it myself!

I agree. There are other areas that can be as friendly as Texas, but it's just a way of life here, and I like it.

I'm a Native Texan, and I agree, but if you want the epitome of neighborly treatment, go to Scotland.

We were there for Highland Dancing competitions for a month in August 1983. The first day there, a 16 year old dancer broke her ankle. A local volunteered to drive me, the injured dancer and another dancer to a hospital. The hospital was hours away by car. He would not accept a dime for his time or his gas, and the hospital (no charge) told us to just bring the crutches back when we were through with them. The man's wife told us she would meet us somewhere later and take the crutches back for us.
