Traffic to Austin on I-35 - 12-03-2007, 12:01 PM

Random question:

I have to drive to Austin for a UT graduation Saturday and was wondering, how is the traffic on 35 going from DFW to Austin (construction, random backups, etc)?

Been a few years since I've made the trip and was just curious.

Thanks.

These days it's a real roll of the dice. You never know what's going on. I believe there is some construction north of Waco.

There's always construction. There's always an accident. There's always a tie up, etc. etc. Allow extra time, and be ready for lots of people driving way too fast, too close.

Drove up yesterday. Destination; Capital building. Didn't have any traffic problems. I got to the parking structure in Austin at 0750 so I didn't expect any extra traffic. Your travel time could affect your trip significantly.

I agree, it's a roll of the dice on I35. They're always trying to improve it, but that in itself causes problems. There's really no better way unless you want to spend an extra 1.5 hours on 183 -- it is a much more pleasant drive though. You'll have an extra 1.5 hours of boring, but you won't be driving in a fog of adrenaline and sheer terror.

Yep, roll of the dice. I drove up there last during Thanksgiving, so that was diff. On the way home, we had several wrecks plus holiday traffic. Took me 6 hrs to get home.

I drive it all the time, and like everyone else says, you never know for sure. But one thing I will say, Friday afternoon and evening is the worst time. I don't know if it's students going to Austin for the weekend, or just people in general that have all that pent up energy from working all week, but if you have to go on Friday, the earlier the better.

Take a look at 281 south from Fort Worth, then 183 from Lampasas. That is way better than I35 IMHO.

My wife suggested that last night...might consider that.

Great information all the way around.

Thanks everyone.

I was going to suggest driving at 5:00 am. It's not so bad at that time between Round Rock and Austin.
