Birthday party ideas: 6 yr old - 12-04-2007, 02:55 PM

So I have a 5 yr old born on 2/14/2002, and my wife and I looking for ideas for his 6 yr old birthday party. Our initial thoughts are around a Wii party with just a few of his closest friends/classmates, mostly boys. Of course, we will have (at Christmas) one Wii, and I think contention for who plays when could send the party south quickly.

His interests (that we support/endorse/allow) include music, Transformers, cars/racing/NASCAR, most sports.

I would appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.

I'm not sure about your community, but in mine, the Fire Dept can send out a truck to kid's parties for free. We did that last year, and our 3 year old still says "they came to my party!" every time he sees a fire truck. Great for the boys.

It beat Chuck E. Cheese.

We had a face painter and animal balloon maker come and it was a hit with all the kids.
Though, we also had other activities.

Have you considered Build a Bear?

take the party in and you set a limit per child and you get a party leader etc. Everyone stuffs a bear, and has a good time. The birthday boy/girl gets a special autograph bear, there's some party favors in all the boxes etc etc.

Just a quick look turned up that the Rocket's have a game on the 13th. I know that as a 37 year old, it would be a great birthday party to spend the evening at a pro sporting event with 3 or 4 of my friends and family. They might even put his name on the jumbotron.

For sure. We did one Chuck E. Cheese party and attended several others. I think no one goes there anymore because it's too crowded (Yogi-ism)

Over the next few years, we'll be whittling his b-day parties down to lesser "events" where only the kids he wants there will be there, not the kids of all the people we know.

As for any pro sport, he doesn't yet have the patience for an entire game, at least not baseball. I'm a Cubs fan (I promise not to apologize if you promise not to say "awww), and I took him to a Cubs game in Houston against the Astros. My thinking was that I would spend some time my boy and experience America's once favorite pasttime. At each half inning, he asked "Is it over yet?" It's not that I mind subjecting him to that torture; I just don't want him interrupting my, I mean the game. but seriously though

Anyway, I appreciate all the suggestions thus far. Keep 'em comin'

Pump It Up is always fun for the kids. We've done everything to a carnival with ponies, clown, cotton candy machine and bounce house, going to the Studio's at Las Colinas (they make movies there), to Chuck E Cheese, to Medieval Times, but no matter what age they are, they always love Pump It Up.

When my boy turned 5 (similar interests as yours) we had a bowling party that went over big. The lane took care of the decorations and food, they reserved plenty of lanes for the kids to have fun with, put up the bumpers and had all the 6lb balls out. All we needed to do was bring the cake.

They even gave him a real, brand new bowling pin as a present.

1. The kids had fun, could move around, eat, drink when they wanted.
2. The parents could sit and watch or join in (their choice)
3. If siblings came they could join in or some families chose to get their own lane away from the party to have their own fun (older kids and all that).

Best of all, no cleanup and one big batch of tired, happy kids.

Highly recommended.

Bowling is always fun, but keep in mind, those balls are quite heavy for little girls at that age. My daughter attended a bowling party at age 6, dropped the ball and fell on top of it. We had to rush her to the hospital to get stitches. Sorry to damper the thought, and it is usually a lot of fun, just something to be aware of at that age. Granted, that could happen at any age, but 6 y.o. girls are pretty tiny and those balls are very heavy, even the lightest ones.
