I thought it's 10, but just to be sure, make it 18.

I don't know about the legal limit, but I think my parents started leaving me home alone at 8. It's a maturity thing.

daycares usually keep kids up to grade 6. some up to grade 5.
so, i figured it was somewhere around there.. if daycares are no longer catering to the other grade levels..

We just ran into this year and the laws in Texas are very obscure. As the link that Janet posted, the child has to be at an emotional level to know when and how to call 911. They also have to be left in a "safe" environment, i.e., safe home and relatively safe neighborhood. Our son is turning 11 in a couple of weeks and he just started riding the bus to and from school; however, we have several stay-at-home moms in the neighborhood so there is backup.

OK thanks guys.
The link looks like most TX laws, too much can be read into it.
I appreciate the replies :D

I'd say you can leave start leaving them alone in the house when they start saying: "I'll call 911 on you if you spank me".
Then you can kick them out of the house after they call 911 on you.

my daughter was 10 this past summer and based upon the costs of day care we decided we'd give it a shot. We went over what needed to be done each day, what she was allowed to do and what she wasn't. We made sure she had a list of phone numbers to get in touch with people, and we called to check up on her the first few times we did it. By the end of the summer it wasn't really a big deal anymore.
