It's an honor... - 12-08-2007, 01:26 PM

A friend of mine, who works at the fitness center where I work out, asked if he could buy an 8x10 print of the image below. Since I can't sell it for profit (zoo policy), it's a freebie. Nonetheless, I consider it an honor and a compliment when someone wants to hang a print of one of my images in their house.

Just wanted to share that. :-)

That's really a nice feeling isn't it. Sort of makes you feel proud.

Congratulations! It's very satisfying when someone wants to publish or buy an image of yours.

Explain the zoo policy please. Is it general or did it have something to do with your school trip?

Way to go, John.

You have many fine photos, and this particular one is truly excellent. Nevertheless, it would not be my choice to hang in my home. I'd feel as though he were watching me, waiting to make his move.

It's general. When you go in with a camera, you're agreeing to not sell the images you make or use them commercially. It's posted on the FW Zoo web site.

Just read that same PDF, it also says you are not allowed to post them on the internet

One of the main reasons I no longer go to zoos.

Well there goes one of Garry Winogrand's grestest series of works.

That must be new because I checked the policy before shooting. What's the point in shooting there then? Makes zero sense. I'm calling them this week to discuss this.

Next time set up a softbox at a 45 to give better catchlights and setup a bit wider so you can gel the background and use a hairlight. Have the subject lie in a sexy position on some reflective surface and open their mouth slightly while saying "ooooo..."

Wait.. this isn't the Human Forum section. Nevermind!

Just kidding John... Love the image.. Congrats. I want to go out there sometime and try out my 300... Wondering if that would be too much though... I just don't have enough opportunities to use it and the zoo seems like it would be a good place...albeit, I'd look like a nerd...

A search for Fort Worth Zoo yields about 100 galleries on PBase and Smugmug combined. I'm not sure about the Zoo policy. It also says that by entering the Zoo you agree to allow the Zoo to use your image for any purpose whatsoever. Both of their tacit "agreements", I think, are pushing the limits. Certainly there are some terms that they couldn't say you "agree" to simply by entering the park.

Since you've already violated the "agreement" by posting the picture here, why not just sell the image. Might as well be hung for a sheep instead of a lamb.

LOL

Well, as I stated above, when I checked the policy prior to shooting, either I didn't notice the Internet part or it wasn't there and has been added recently. I'm going to contact them this week to discuss their policy if for no other reason than to improve my understanding.
